Pre-race routine:

Borrowed COGirl's pump to firm up a tire. Tried to warm up (in both senses of the word) and figure out how many fleece layers to wear. Started with 3 and went to 2.
Should've taken warm drinks for pre & post race
Event warmup:

Planned to jog & ride for 20 min before, but was very cold and didn't ride.
Hey Mark - it was definately colder than 15!! (But maybe it feels warmer when you go that fast!)
Run
  • 18m
  • 2 miles
  • 09m  min/mile
Comments:

Couldn't get a rythm and couldn't find any energy (now I know why!)
Didn't realize until after the race that I was just getting the flu.

What would you do differently?:

Warm drinks before would have been a big boost
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Opted to use my road bike. Had to sit down and take off the gloves to get into the bike shoes (with booties already mounted).
What would you do differently?:

Had I been healthy - jump on to get up to speed
Bike
  • 40m
  • 10.5 miles
  • 15.75 mile/hr
Comments:

By the second bike leg, my bottles were more ice than water. Hydration wasn't happening, but it shouldn't have been too big a problem on a healthy day.
What would you do differently?:

WARM DRINKS
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

T2 & T3 went like T1.
Run
  • 25m
  • 2 miles
  • 12m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

By run 2 I lost breakfast in the trees and decided a DNF was in order, but I decided not to shortcut the route to stay out of the deeper snow. By the time I reached the transition area (and my car) I thought "what's a few more minutes on the bike?"
Not much of a running performance.
Post race
Warm down:

It was so cold that the hot drinks were gone. Couldn't wait for the next batch, so I sat in my car for 30 minutes until I quit shaking and could feel my extremities.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

FLU
I rated mental effort a 5, for gutting it out.

Event comments:

Billed as a "no frills race", it was just that. I really liked the low-key format and it was too short for aid stations on the route. Very small race that fits nicely into the off-season schedule. The weather is a crap shoot in January, but the promoter was organized enough to change the course to fit. I even received an e-mail in advance describing the changes. Many competitors arrived with 2 bikes - one with snow tires and one without - just in case.
Met Markdills38 and COGirl (and her family) a great treat to meet some BTers in person!

It was nice to meet you on race day. It was certainly colder than 15 on the bike. My water was frozen as well. I certainly stayed plenty cool. Sorry you didn't feel well, that SUCKS! Hope to see you out there for the next one. Great job finishing under such terrible circumstances.Mark
