Pre-race routine:

Woke up and really was wishing I had not signed up for this race as I didn't feel like getting up early. Dozed for a bit in the car on the way to the race and ate a big bowl of cereal before I left.
Event warmup:

Ran back to the car to get my sunglasses.
Swim
  • 10m 1s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

My goal on the swim was to go hard. I felt like I didn't go hard at Danskin and even though I haven't been training for swimming much, I have been doing lots of upper body strength work.
What would you do differently?:

Train
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

Well, this was a first. I was really trying to multitask during transition, so much so that I didn't notice that I put on one bike shoe and one running shoe and had my bike off the rack and starting to head to the bike exit when I noticed the shoe problem. Threw my bike down, changed my shoe and headed off as quickly as I could.
What would you do differently?:

Not put on my running shoe for riding my bike
Bike
  • 55m 38s
  • 17.6 miles
  • 18.98 mile/hr
Comments:

I really tried to push it on the bike, but didn't have a real strategy for the race. I didn't have my camelbak, but I also didn't have my aero bottle so I lost a little time reaching down to get my water bottle on several occasions. I didn't eat anything on the bike and tried to stay in aero bars. I felt good on the bike and I was pleased with my overall time.
What would you do differently?:

do an aero bottle? push harder?
Transition 2
  • 01m 34s
Comments:

much better transition, but I did have to untie shoe that I had tied earlier in my T1 shoe mishap
Run
  • 29m 31s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 31s  min/mile
Comments:

I had to walk twice on the course when I just didn't feel like pushing it. Overall I really felt good on the run but felt like I had a little left in the tank when I finished.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out and chatted with lots of BT folks. It was so awesome to see so many folks out! Then we had to head out before awards as my parents needed relief from child care. I heard I missed some good hardward. They went 10 deep and I was 8th so I missed out on getting my medal.

Event comments:

I really liked this race and thought it was better organized than when we did Texasman on this same course. I like Tom Ryan's sense of humor and the party atmoshpere.

you could start a new treand with one bike shoe and one running shoe... I thought I only did silly things like that.. It was great seeing you even though it was pretty brief before the swim.. it's great to hear that things are going well for you.. and no one wants to get up as early as we do for events

Your shoe story is an instant classic...but I am sure you were definitely not the 1st to do it!  Congratulations on a fine race when you weren't feeling as motivated as you could be.  Get them to send that medal to you.. you earned it!  Fast bike on a slick and hilly course!
