Subject: Wetsuit Rules: 78 - 84 Degrees
My race on Saturday is in a lake that is currently 80 degrees. The rule provided by the race coordinator states that:

"When the water temperature is greater than 78 degrees, but less than 84 degrees Fahrenheit, age group participants may wear a wet suit at their own discretion, provided however that participants who wear a wet suit within this temperature range shall not be eligible for prizes or awards."

This leaves me in a quandary. I don't realistically expect to be a top finisher, but I do want to go for it and race hard with that hope. Putting on the wetsuit may help me get closer to the podium, but it could also start mind games about giving up before the race even starts.

What would YOU do?

I wouldn't wear it, not because of the podium, but because at least with the organization that I do most of my races with, that you get a little X in the "DQ" column in the race results, and the race doesn't count in the USAT rankings.

eta: after reading the next post, I did forget to mention the heat.  It would be pretty hot.  Go swim in an 82 or so degree pool and see how it feels after a few laps, to get the idea.

80 degrees is hot. It may be close to unbearable in a wetsuit. My race a few weeks ago was 83, and it was very warm to swim in, like bath water. Go without if you can bear it.

Same concerns I had last race. The RD announced NO WETSUITS 83.3 degrees. Several walked away and DNS. Others like me just worried myself senseless. I don't care about the podium doubt I ever will. But I survived and learned to trust my training. BTW swam a few days later in 84 using only a shorty and cooked in less then a 1/2 mile.

I wouldn't wear it.  It gets really hot wearing a wetsuit in that warm of water, especially if it's a full.  If you can, try it out before the race and see how you feel.

I wouldn't wear it.  Get a swim in this week without it to get comfortable and then you won't have anything to worry about.

other day I was swimming in a pool at 83 degrees and after 1/2 hour I quit because I was too hot.

80 is definitely too warm for a wetsuit. The pool I usually use is often at 80 degrees, and it's uncomfortable with just a swimsuit. Seriously, any help you'll get from the wetsuit's flotation will be undercut by the sluggish feeling you'll get from being so hot.

One technical note on the wetsuit rule: when it's between 78-84, it's correct, you won't be eligible for awards or prizes. Theres another risk that goes along with it...I've raced where the RD has interpreted that as "You can race, but your results won't count". And they didn't record my finishing time, nor report it to the USAT.

Lesson learned: check with the RD before the race.

I would agree that 80 is probably too warm to be wearing a wetsuit; if you would like to wear it I would definitely test it at race intensity before race day.

Our cutoff is 23C (74F) and I did a race last year just below the cutoff (OD); I was thoroughly cooked before the turnaround and can't imagine swimming in 80F with a wetsuit.

Way too hot for a wetsuit -

any advantage you would gain (a minute or two) would be lost by the dehydration and needing to remove your wetsuit.

I swam in Walden last week, 80 degrees, and was testing a new wetsuit - I had to go to breast stroke to cool off, then I was unzipping it to get some water in.

I would not wear it -

You'll feel hot with it on. I'd go without. That will take a few seconds off on your transition too!

Just an add on question to monkeyboys - what is the best way to handle T1 if you plan on going without a shirt for the swim (I need to get a tri suit I know) - I would not want to waste a bunch of time trying to get a shirt over a wet body - should i just go shirtless on the bike and throw it on in T2 or just lose the shirt altogether?

Under Armour is your friend.  You could be caked in wet flour, and their Loose Gear shirts will still go on easily.

Way way too hot for a wetsuit.  Depending on how long the race is you will be sweating to death by the end.  If the race is short the speed gains will be minimal anyways.

I really have a hard time with this, people are walking away from a swim in 83.3degree water just because they can't wear a wetsuit.... wimps!

Personally I really don't like the fact that wetsuits are allowed for most races, as long as the water temp is above 60deg why is a wetsuit needed?

OP, I did my first sprint in May this year in 63degree water and made the podium in my ag (40-49) I was the only one in my group not using a wetsuit. Don't wear it you don't need it!

Okay, thanks everyone. I'll ditch the wetsuit. I will have to put a shirt on in T1, though, because I race on the tri team of my LBS, and I won't have it on in the water, as the three big pockets in the back would act as a parachute.

So, what is the warmest temperature you would wear a wetsuit in?

Dang you are hard core.  Below 70 I will wear mine everytime much over that too hot.  I just don't like cold water.

I'll wear one 78 or below for sure.  Up to 84 I'd think about it but test it first.

It's a mental help for me as well as the speed benefit.

Anything above 20C and I'm debating whether or not to wear it; beyond that and I just get too warm.

At that temp you don't need it.  I swam in 65 degree water earlier in the year without one and was fine...A little cold but no problem.

Go out and have a great race!
