Pre-race routine:

Drove down the night before to avoid the 3 am wake-up. Got up about 4:30 ish and immediately started to rethink my decision to do the race. I had had a pretty miserable flu-like virus the entire week and woke up feeling like crap. Cough for several minutes and attempted to clear my lungs and sinus'. I took a double dose of cold medicine, and decided to give it a shot anyway.
Event warmup:

Arrived at the Transition area pretty early so getting marked and my chip were pretty easy. I moved to transition and set up my area. I lucked out on the bike rack. and got the end spot right at the entrance. I set up my spot and went out for a short ride, and then a 2 mile or so run. My HR was through the roof, and my lungs were on fire. It did slightly eased up so I continued on still feeling like crap. Finished my warm-up and a quick run to the toilet only to find the line too long. Thats ok since I knew how to fix that.

Comments:

The run started out pretty rough. but I guess adrenaline took over and I started feeling better. I had let several people get in front of me but was able to catch all but 6. And I fixed that full porta john pee-line problem enroute again this race. Gross I know.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing under the circumstances.
Transition 1
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

I had a decent transition. Took slightly longer to get in the shoes due to the up hill start. No biggie. Still a strong point. 3rd fastest overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Started to feel the effects of being sick around mile 8 but I still pushed as hard as I could so I'm satisfied with the effort.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing under the circumstances.
Transition 2
  • 00m 27s
Comments:

Best transition ever. Fastest overall.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.

Comments:

Started feeling pretty crappy after the first two miles. I'm very happy it was a downhill finish since it probably offset my fatigue whic is good since it could have been much slower.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Darnk some water. Coughed for about 15 minutes. Walked and chatted with friends.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No excuses!

Event comments:

Overall I'm satisfied. I had hoped to finish a couple of minutes faster (as everyone does) and I think I was poised to do so with my training. Had some sickness issues which really dissapointed me since I really had trained very hard. Oh well, I still finished 3 minutes or so faster than last year and it was still fun. Looks like I should finish second in masters for the overall series again this year.
Bluesky usually puts on great events however the last two post race events have been pretty marginal. Once again splits were all jacked up for many racers (not me this time) and the awards ceremony was very late. I try not to be too critical, but we are paying and traveling a long way for some of these races.
Thanks to neal for jockstrapping and driving on the way back so I could sleep!

Great job on the race even though you sounded pretty nasty with all that congestion before the race.

At least you did not smell like urine after the race.  I am glad you took a shower before the ride home though.
