Could be due to neck tension.  Make sure your head is in a neutral position..

I get them sometimes if I wear a cap for too long.  Hence, I don't wear swim caps.

A couple thoughts: do you wear glasses, just not in the pool?

As pointed out above, head position makes a big difference--neck tension can be pretty bad if you're off a bit, and that can lead to headaches.  Your eyes shouldn't be looking ahead (at the wall), but instead look diagonally down and slightly in front of you.  It's a lot easier on the neck and shoulders.

Also, are you breathing enough?  Make sure you're expelling enough air when your face is in the water to get a good breath when you turn your head to breathe.

lets see...

no i dont wear glasses/contacts.

my head position might be to blame, it could be a little off axis. i think it might be this plus neck tension just from turning and breathing so much cause i feel it in my neck.

i dont think its the googles too tight but it could very well be.

and i did happen to wear a cap for the first time just try it since i race with one.

thanks or all the input guys

I've had that happen before when my swim cap was in the wrong position (i.e. it was pulling at my hair or something). Have you tried adjusting your swim cap?

I get them a lot more when the pool is too warm.  The pool at my gym was about 85 degrees on a daily basis and it drove me nuts.  I ended up switching to another branch of my gym where the pool was 78-80.  It got rid of about 75% of my headaches, but I still get them now and then.

I get them in highly chlorinated pools, too warm of pools, and when my cap is too tight or I swim an ultra long set.

its so funny because all of these things could be the cause!

im really feeling that it might be a combination of the swim cap and my neck...

 thanks guys!

I get headaches thinking about how badly I swim, but I think that's a different issue...
