Anyone done this race before?

How is the swim?

I missed last year, but did this race in 2005 and 2006 (and I'll be there this year).  I thought the swim was great.  They do wave starts, so its not mass chaos, the water is calm and it's freshwater (as opposed to the usual salt water swims down here in south Florida).  Its a two-lap course for the half iron distance, and both years that I did it the swim was wet-suit legal.

I have raced 3 times the MiamiMan (2005,2006 and 2007) and this year will be my 4th one...

The swim is great...it's in a crystal lake in Larry & Penny Thompson Park next to the Miami Metro Zoo...by the time of the race (Nov.) the water temperatures are around 76oF, wet-suit allowed, I have done with out it, but it's a little chily for me...I will use it first time this year...The start is in waves and if you are doing the 1/2 Iron is 2 loops, when you complete the 1st loop...you go out of the water, do a U-turn around a pole and then again jump into the water to complete the 2nd one...now...If you are doing the International Distance...it's only 1 swim loop....

Good Luck!!!!

Great thanks.

How is the bike and run? I've heard "easy" to windy and tough.

Yes...the bike course is flat but the challenge in this Triathlon is in the bike...it's usually very windy...last year was brutal...we had gusty winds...and...usually the winds come from NE...that means...you will have most of the headwinds/crosswinds in the way back to the Transition Area....Uffff!!!

The run is great and fun...it is inside the Metro-Zoo...with the view of all the animals...

I have a friend that attempted this race back in 2006 and someone had thrown a bunch of roofing nails on the bike course which lead to a bunch of flats. After 3 flats he decided to DNF.

That's true!!!...I remember that....but....It was notified to the Organizators and they immediately notified the Police...and they went to check that...apparently teens involved...

Never happened again...

After two flats I would be heartbroken, especially if "A" race. Had me thinking though... I ussually only ride/train with a patch kit, 2 CO2's and a spare tube. is that enough for 1/2 distance race? Do most bring two spare tubes in case? I am going from a year of sprints where I brough nothing with me and thankfully no flats. But for this race, I was not bringing anything more than I ussually train with... Suggestions?

I have raced the MiamiMan since 2005 and this year will be my 4th one....and...this only happened in 2006....and....they have polices in every important intersection and some police cars checking all the bike course and MultiRace staff in the rest of the intersection....and....Also there are more motorcycles with USTA referees checking...

About tubes...I use tubulars tires...and...I only bring one with me....

You could use some Mr. Tuffy's .  I used them on my road bike and never had a flat once I put them in.  I've heard discussion that they slow you down a bit, but not quite as much as a flat would

As for the race venue...the swim is great - lovely lake! - the bike is flat and can be windy...the run?  hmmmm, you do go through the zoo a bit, but there is also a section through a dirt/stone access road, and another section through a parking lot.  I was unimpressed with the run.  I think the biggest factor in this race could be the heat.  It is November, and can seem like it's not too hot, but don't discount the heat!!!

i  just did the bike race route this morning...it is typically windy going out and then then as you start heading back in from the 2nd loop (for the HIM) it tends to get really windy.  It is super hot during the run and barely any shade.  After this morning I am getting so excited! It's sooo close!

It's always windy...it's part of my training...I have learned to deal with it...LOL

The wind was brutal last year....I hope it's better this year....

My wife and I are coming down from DC for the Olympic distance.

just a note...a little late...I was down in Miami for my son's BMX race today, which is 2.7 miles from Larry and Penny Thompson Park...as far as I can tell, the bike route goes RIGHT BY the BMX track, right about the time the BMX CAR TRAFFIC will be it's heaviest, with their racing starting at 9:00am...sooooo, beware and be watchful!!!  Best I can tell, this will occur on Hainlin Mill Drive, just after the first turn off SW 127 and won't last for more than a few hundred yards, however, there will be cars and pedestrians and BMXers riding around clueless.

Wish I could be there to cheer you on, but I have come down with a wicked cold so I won't be watching you, or my son race   GOOD LUCK TO ALL and BE SAFE !!!
