Subject: metatarsal arch pain....help??
I have been having a lot of trouble lately with pain in the balls of my feet, particularily on long rides, and now I am getting numb toes while running. I have started to really work on stretching my calf muscles a couple of times a day (having read that helps), but the pain persists, and now it is starting to follow me around during the day.

Anybody have any suggestions for fixing this problem?

No...but I'll be watching this thread closely because I have terrible toe-numbing issues too. Initially, it happened only when running...but lately, it's been cropping up in my bike rides, as well. Once the pain/numbness kick in...it hangs around for a good while too (as in, a couple of hours). Sure does suck when you're 30 or 40 miles into a ride (and about 20 away from home) and all of a sudden the pain/numbness sets in...really makes for an unpleasant ride back home.

An update...

Went to my LRS (Local running shop) and bought a pair of Superfeet insoles. I ran/rode in them yesterday, and was not debilitated by pain....so, fingers crossed

I would suggest getting your gait analyzed and properly fitted running shoes first.  Also Newton running shoes offer really nice forefoot cushioning.  They are pricey but my foot doesn't hurt......after 2 stress fractures and 19 months of foot pain WORTH IT

I've got a pair of Superfeet insoles. Had them in my running shoes (which were properly fitted with a gait analysis) for 2 months, but recently took them out and put them in my cycling shoes instead. They seem to help more in my cycling shoes, than they did in my running shoes...go figure. I'm hoping they will solve my toe numbing problem...so far, so good.

When I first started running about 5 years ago.  Had all types of problems with the metarsals.    Balls of my feet went numb and felt like the big toe knuckle was on fire (that's what I call it)

Upgraded from Asics Cumulus shoes to 2110, (now 2130s) and put in Green Superfeet for support of arches.   Had no real problem after that.   Couple IMs later, and multiple Marathons.

Bought new 2130s (second pair) and used the inserts/soles that come with the model.   I know, call me stupid....ON Sunday, felt my arch fall or something like that...and now my left foot is giving me the pain in the metarsals and big toe knuckle.

I can walk some but then out of the blue, one step will make my foot feel on fire....and I've got a marathon to run on the 7th of Sept.   So lots of ice, rest, and going to the pool for water running.
