Dude, you live in Dallas!

It does NOT get cold in Dallas in October.

Although you may not find any races between November and March, you should have no trouble running and biking outside all winter.

There are many on this site who will bike/run in any condition short of a blizzard.

I am not quite that tough.  When I used to live in Dallas, 40's would probably have been my limit.  After moving to Colorado, I have slowly learned to HTFU (and I invested in some proper cold weather clothes).  I will bike if the wind chill is 25 or above, and run in the wind chill is 10 or above.

I've run in the teens and bike in the upper 30's. Colder than that and my outer layer is the comforter on our bed.

Do you have a local tri club?  We try to keep various activities going year around and USAT have a fun winter competition for clubs.  If my memory serves me correct, an Alaskan club won or came close to winning the cycling comp which I thought was awesome.  That doesn't mean racing tris but we do other stuff.  I am almost in the north east and our running race season goes year round so many of us keep fit that way.  We also have a bike club which rides year round (if possible) so there is always a group ride available.  If we have a particularly cold and snowy winter then yes, it is all indoors.

I've run down to 15F and with hand and toe warmers I can bike down to about 28F.

If you're willing to travel down under tri racing never has to end.

Out here in AZ, we have a few races late in the year if you can travel. SOMA in oct and IMAZ (sold out for 08). We also have shorter sprints and Olys through Dec. NV also has some late season races.

Tri season ends? No one told me this. But seriously, I'm with Bear on this. I run year-round and the coldest I've run/raced in is the upper teens/low 20s. You can buy the sub-zero gear and it's actually pretty comfortable. I haven't ridden much outside in the winter but am planning to this year since I have an HIM on April 5. I actually prefer running in the winter so that's a good focus for the cold season for me. I'm sure it's warmer by you than NYC so you'll be fine.

I will run in any weather short of lightning.   Bike it really depends what I am training for if anything.  I don't mind cold but don't like wetness as my handling skills suck and I wipe out on slick roads.  I would say this is total personal preference though.
