Just curious?

I have ridden 600 miles since I started keeping track on here in April and I got the bike a year ago (June 07). I guess I could have 1500 total but I didn't ever keep track until April.

I should add the bike shop said my chain was worn and probably causing my gear skipping.

As long as the frame is not cracked then you will just need to replace the parts. At some point it will become more money wise to replace then to keep fixing. I would say that it is a numbers thing. But there are some people who replace after so many miles no matter what. I just don't like spending money unless I feel that it is a good investment in the long run. But that is just my opinion. Mispelled as it may be.

You should get well over 600 miles. You will just want to check the links to see if they look worn. Once the chain starts to show some wear you can replace it.

The duration the chain will last will vary on the quality of chain and the care that the chain receives.

Haven't replaced mine. I'm about 1600 miles on it. The key is to clean it
regularly and you should be fine.

A chain shoudn't wear out in only 600ish miles I haven't replaced a chain yet on any of my bikes. I would try lubing it with stuff called ATB it is a lube made locally and works great in dry conditions.

I meant I have only kept track of the miles for the last 600. I have had the bike a year+ so it's probably closer to 1500 now.

Thanks guys.

You can get an Ultegra quality chain for around $40 at most LBS. Once your chain does start to show ware don't hesitate to replace it. A worn chain can lead to more expensive repairs such as a new cassette or chain rings. To help prolong the life of your chain try to clean and lube it about every 100 miles. I too use ATB chain lube and find it works well. Once you lube your chain run through your gears then gently wipe off the chain to remove any excess. You don't want your chain, cassette, and chain rings to get gunked up.

Depending on where you go to get your tune-up they my want you to change out your chain before you really need to.

When I took my bike in after 4 years and they told me that I needed a new chain they actually showed me why. They compared it to a new chain and showed the differances in the spacing between the link on both chain. It wasnt until then that I notice that the old chain was a lot wider (stretch) compared to the new one.

ALso as long as its not skipping and or making noise, it should last at least 3 years, depending on the quailty of the chain. My old chain was stock $20 new chain $60 and it still is as good now as it was when it was new, going on 6 years (5000 miles) at least

As usual, I'd recommend you read Sheldon Brown's stuff.

The chain does not wear out so much as it begins to stretch. When your chain stretches it will begin to wear down the teeth on the chain ring and cassette. A simple test is to measure the length of a section of chain. The pin to pin length of 24 links of a new chain is 12 inches. When this length is 1/16 longer it is time to replace your chain. I could imagine that like many things in life assigning a standard distance to replace your chain will be problematic. We all bike differently on different terrain and in different weather and these will all play a part.

No go outside and ride.

LOL I didn't see the Chain at the end of your title for the thread. So I have been so lost. I thought you wanted to know how often to change your bike.
