Subject: Insurance on Bicycles?

Does anyone know if there is specific coverage you can buy just for your bicycle?  I know my homeowners covers theft and if i was to get hit by a car then their insurance covers it.  But what if i just crash and total my bike?  I'm about to make a huge puchase on a new tri bike >$8000 with wheel set.  I'm worried about what would happen if i crashed. Thats alot of money to just throw away if you make a bad move.

P.S. I know i don't need that expensive of a bike cause i'm not that fast yet.  But i'm not actually paying that much. I'm great friends with a bike store owner and i'm getting it at cost.

I would speak with your HO carrier and be sure that they will actually cover your bike. I called mine and was told they would not cover it. I called another carrier and got a stand alone policy for my bike for full replacement value with a $50 deductible. It doesn't cover everything (like if I crash and it's my own fault) but it will cover a variety of other losses. Call an agent or an insurance carrier directly and ask questions.

I've not heard of it personally, but give your homeowner's insurance people a call and talk with them - they should know if you can get a rider to your current policy.  Also, the folks at the bike shop might know.

I called my insurance carrier (State Farm) and got a personal property rider on my Cervelo P2C that was stand-alone from my auto and renter's insurance policies.  That way, if something happened to my bike, I could claim against that without impacting my auto or renters insurances.

And, for $50/year, I ended up receiving $5200 in benefits from the policy.  Someone backed into my car and cracked the carbon frame.  I called my insurance and they said to take it to a shop, have it fixed (which meant replacing the frame at $2k), and send them the invoice.

6 months later, the bike was stolen from the trunk rack of my car while I was loading up the truck to move.  The thief cut the cable lock, took both of my bikes, and was gone within 2 minutes.  Insurance paid full value of the policy ($3200) which enabled me to purchase a different bike (since that one was bad-luck, apparently).

So you pocketed the money and bought this bike?  :-)

Most insurance companies will pay for replacement up to a certain amount.   I can tell you right now, it won't be close to enough.

We got a Rider for my bikes and my wife's jewlery.  It cost us like $40/yr.  HIGHLY recommended.  It is part of our Homeowners policy.  So basically, if I leave my garage open and I come home and my bikes are gone, they get replaced.

Best money spent!

Do you have to pay your home owners insurance deductible first or is it seperate.  Because mine is $2000 so that would save me some money, but i would still have to shell out $2000.

My home insurance only covered the bike to a maximum of $800 and I had to pay a $500 deductable!?!  So I added a rider that covered my P2SL and the tandem.  It costs almost $100 a year but both bikes are insured against fire, theft, vandalism etc and are covered for replacement cost with no deductable.

x2 on the personal property rider. I have $2500 of coverage for various things (jewelry, laptop, etc.) and I'll probably increase the amount when I get a tri bike. It currently costs me $34/year and there's no deductible.

ETA that it is independent of my other policies (renter's and auto insurance), so the deductibles for the other policies don't apply to the PP rider. No deductible whatsoever.

Call your home owners you probaly need a rider.  Mine is costing me 10% of the replacement cost per year...which is quite steep. If you have a claim and are not sure they will find a way to not pay.  BE SURE.  I looked into stand alone bike insurance and it doesn't exist.  If you live in Austraila you can buy it but not in the US
