Luray, Virginia
United States
Set-Up, Inc.
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 17m 56s
Overall Rank = 21/460
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 3/40
Pre-race routine:

The norm - 2 cliff bars and a gatorade 2-3 hours before the race and then drive to the race site with Ally.

Took a lot longer than I thought it would to set up and get ready. Felt like I was rushed, long bathroom lines, etc.
Event warmup:

Swam for a few minutes then headed over to the swim start. I was not really expecting a lot at this race as it is only a C race and my training has been limited since LP.
Swim
  • 19m 3s
  • 1600 yards
  • 01m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was shorter than last year by at least a 100 and they moved the transition timing mat from up on top of the stairs to right out of the swim exit.

Overall an ok swim. Started off fast to break away from everyone else and then found a really good pair of feet to drag off of.

At the start I went way too far left as I thought the volunteer wearing the bright yellow jacket was the cone. Corrected it when I saw the pack over to my right and was able to hop onto someone my speed.

Except for the first 200, this went pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

Site correctly the first 200 yards.
Transition 1
  • 01m 47s
Comments:

Pretty good T1.

T1 is long and includes a short beach run followed by a bunch of stairs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 48s
  • 26.3 miles
  • 21.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Happy with this ride as I was pushing it. There were some absolute studs at this race, even if it is just a local small race. 31st overall but 8th place was just two minutes faster than I was - lots of us in the 1:10 - 1:14 range.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I have not biked a lot since LP so I was happy to be right in the thick of things coming off the bike (I was 8th OA coming into transition).
Transition 2
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

This sucked. I could not get my bike racked for some reason and then I had to stop 2 times to get rocks out of my running shoes. I was 30 seconds slower than the top guys.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget my towel at home and get rocks in my shoes.
Run
  • 42m 55s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off running and feeling good. I had told myself that if my hip started to hurt I was going to back off.

Around mile 1.5 the first guy in my AG went by me...and boy did he go by me. He was flying (later found out he is a 31 minute open 10K runner, he had the fastest split, 34:20, here). No chance to stick with him so I kept my own pace.

Around mile 3 the 2nd guy in my AG went by me and I decided to stick with him as my hip was still ok at this point. That lasted about a mile and my hip started hurting and he was pulling away so I backed off the pace and just cruised the last 2 miles in. I was hoping to split a 40 or 41 here but there was no need to hurt myself as my A race is 3 weeks away.

What would you do differently?:

Looking back I probably would not have gone hard with the second place guy, but my hip was feeling good up to that point.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, talked and ate a lot of food. Watched Ally, Ernie and a bunch of other friends come in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

LP recovery, hip, lack of training.

Event comments:

Overall a good race. David Glover, the RD, does a really good job, the course is pretty, the giveaways are solid and the food is wonderful. They even have PBJ!

Great job at the race, even if you didn't feel at the top of your game.  Of course you were happy they had PB&J, its what you live off of.

Looking forward to Reston.

Nice race, Dan.  Congrats on the age group hardware.  That's a good time for a C race and limited training.

That was a great "C" race you should kick butt in your "A" race.
