I know my reason is a little different,, I wanted to get better at doing tri's, I always here that you need to get a good base, do lots of long slow training, so I knew that I wouldnt' do it unless I was signed up for a race that scared me.. an ironman

Very nice!  2 IM w/i a week.....awesome....and for a worthy cause, aplastic anemia.  Glad to hear your wife is in remission.

My reason is purely selfish....it channels my tendancies towards 'excess' to something healthy that I enjoy.

Good interview!  I like what you said about leveraging yourself to something bigger than you.  I will use your inspirational story to find a good cause for my next IM.

Once upon a time I believed it was impossible. After slowly building up through smaller steps I now know it's possible. I get to prove it to myself in 7 months time. Can't wait!!!

A friend of mine that I served in the Marines with was in town after his latest tour in Afghanistan. We were out having a beer, and he casually mentioned that civilian life (I got out 15 years ago, he is retiring this year) has turned me into a "fat bastard."

I went home and stood on the scale.

He was right.

Now, in a few weeks I will do IMOO, and I'll weigh in at somewhere between 175-180 pounds. I was 220 when I signed up.

10 years ago I was 380lbs and had a doctor tell me if I didn't do something about my weight, Id be dead in a year. I decided to participate in a clinical trail for a new surgery that help reduce the size of your stomach. That surgery turned into what is now known as a RNY gastric bypass. After losing 100lbs, my personal trainer suggested a Danskin Triathlon. I did the race and never looked back. I love this sport. Nov. 1, 2008 is Ironman Florida and the 10th anniversary of that surgery. I want to celebrate by showing the world that I survived and Im 200lbs lighter and that you CAN turn your life around when it looks the darkest!! I want to show those people who are dealing with eating issues and obesity that it is possible to lose and maintain weight with whatever method they choose...healthy eating, surgery, exercise or...my favorite, a combination of all three.

I'm heavy. I'm slow. I have a high percentage of body fat. I never thought I could do it. Then I changed my mind, and I did it. IMLP 2008, came in at 16:02 and have never been happier.

I take care of people every day who ignore their health and are overweight, diabetic, have heart disease, lung disease, and a host of other problems.  My dad ignored his health most of his life and is diabetic, has had a couple heart attacks and open heart surgery, a pacemaker, has lung disease, and at the age of 71 acts like he's 90.  I refuse to be like them.  Having an Ironman and other races as a goal every year provides even more motivation.

IM South Africa is held in my home town.  I went down to watch one year and said to myself:  "that looks like fun".  The next year I did it.

I like to exercise.  Doing sprint, olympic distance, and halfs are fun, but they don't require too much training.  I get bored easy & need something to keep me busy.  IM has helped!  The training has been fun!!!  I'll know if the actual race is fun after Sunday (IM KY)!!  :-)

Because I really love seeing the look on people's faces when I tell them what an IM invovles, and that, yes, it's all done in one day

I love the challenge (my first will be Ironman Cozumel 2009) ... I have one life to live and I want to get as much out of it as possible.  Why, people may ask ... WHY NOT? I say!

Because I never want to look back at a time in my life and ask myself- "wonder if?"
It is so awesome to challange yourself to something that most people consider not only insanity but near impossible. The commitment, the motivation, the desire to over come obsticals - all this plus more that I received while training for my first Ironman have served me through all areas of my life. I believe it has given me a much greater appreciation for the things that people overcome in their lives by having the faith, the grit and the determination to succeed.
I love the internal challange. When I am training and when I am racing an event, there may be people who I am trying to pass on the bike or run down. But at the deepest level, it is all about me vs me. What negative thoughts can I push down and how much positive and confidence can I find within me? That is one huge reason I do an Ironman. That, plus, as someone else said, I love the look on someones face when I tell them that I have (and will soon be again) swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run 26.2 miles back to back to back all in the course of under 17 hours.....

Also BECAUSE I CAN.  I did IMFL in 2006 in a large part because I wanted to raise money for Moffitt Cancer Center where my parents were both treated.  Janus Charity Challenge allow IM triathletes to raise money for the charity of their choice so that was what I did.   I'm slow, but I finished in the alotted time and raised a bunch of money for cancer research in the process.  I'm doing the same this year

So Why?  I do this for Christine(Lucy) whom we recently lost to cancer in a violent and unbelievably fast way.  She too wanted to be an ironman and will not get that chance now.  For Terri (Bunnyrunner) Currently fighting breast cancer with so much courage and dignity she amazes me on a daily basis.  For my friend Susan (also a triathlete but not on BT) who is also fighting breast cancer.  For FisrcutB8 (rob, testicular cancer) for Scott (spokes cancer survivor) for my mom and dad (breast and lung) For all the other Bters and their families fighting the fight against this horrible illness.  They all remind me to take nothign for granted and to keep putting one foot in front of the other.  Surgery chemo and radiation are way harder than triathlon.

I don't have a clue what makes people want to take on this crazy task but I hope that one day I will make the step from HIM to the big show.
If anyone wants to know why most people don't do them, I think I have that answer... Its hard, not enough time to train
properly, also its hard.
