Overall Rank = 124/519

Age Group Rank = 17/59
Pre-race routine:

Got up early ate my peanut butter and honey sandwich. Then I woke Larissa up, who wasn't feeling too good. Then drove to Imperial Beach. We had to park a mile away. I set up my transition area and then just waited. I had to visit the porta john 2 times. LOL I watched the first waves start. It made me grin ear to ear. I was getting excited. Then I finally found Larissa again. I had lost her since I parked the car (she was sleeping in it). We chatted and I had her zip my wetsuit up.
Event warmup:

No warm up too much. I did wave my arms around a bit and do some stretching. Then I moved to the front of the line of the wave. Might as well start first, right.
Swim
  • 11m 44s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 09s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was crazy. I started in the front and ended mid pack. I was doing great running in and jumping over the crashed waves. But then I tried to jump over the first tall wave and it caught me and through me back. I lost a lot of ground. Atleast 30 feet. Then I had to fight the big break again. This time I dived under the wave and that worked great. Once we were past the break, I could start to swim a little more normal. I was still struggling quite a bit as the water was much more choppy than the day before. After rounding the first buoy it really sucked going parallel to the beach. The choppy waves would crash into your face as you tried to breath. Oh, and my new goggles that I never got to test, leaked on one eye. My eye was not a fan of the salt water. Rounding the second buoy, I am thinking I can't wait to get back on land. Then I am hitting where the waves break again. I try to catch one of the bigger waves. I rode it a little, but nothing too exciting. Then it was time to run out of the water and up the beach to the transition area which was a ridiculous distance away. My feet didn't like running down the rough street.
What would you do differently?:

Not loose my goggles the day before, and have to try knew goggles on race day. Also, I would not try to jump over large waves.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Things actually went really well I thought in transition. Especially since it was my first time racing with a wetsuit and also having to wash sand off my feet.
What would you do differently?:

Just be quicker.
Bike
  • 31m 28s
  • 9.32 miles
  • 17.77 mile/hr
Comments:

My bike computer showed 9.6 miles and also, 20.4 average. I loved the bike. I passed a ton of guys that had just worked me in the swim. I ended up hooking up with a dude that was also going well. We rode side by side a lot and encouraged each other.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the bike rocked.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

This is a pretty simple transition and hard to mess up.
Run
  • 21m 14s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

The run went great, I PRed my 5k time!!! I didn't have any pain in my ankle, which I was worried about. I felt strong. They had a 1 mile marker and I hit that at 7:30. So then I was pumped up and picked it up even more. I ran the last 2 miles well under 7 minute mile pace. I was feeling great. I had just past 2 guys in my age group with one mile to go. I was really hoping to run fast enough to keep them behind me. One of the guys came back to challenge me and I was able to pick it up more. I beat him by only 2 seconds. We congradulated each other for a great run.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. LOL
Post race
Warm down:

Stagger around and eat some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim is lame. I need to continue to train on the bike and run to cut down my times there also. If I could just cut down my times by 2 minutes in each event, I would have been top ten.

Event comments:

I had a great time. I wished they timed T1 and T2 instead of just adding it to the bike. Also, the swim seemed too far. LOL

Great Job! I can only imagine how difficult an ocean swim is. Your bike speed is amazing as is your run, almost PRing at the end of a Triathlon, that's just crazy!

Congrats on a great race! LOL...I have the same pre-race meal of a PB & honey sandwich.

The ocean swim sounds gnarly, but to fly like that on the bike and run is awesome! Great job out there!

Awesome job out there Ryan

Glad to see this course was so agreeable for you.

The swell we had running was pretty inconsistent and several waves were able to get clear without any trouble while others just got hammered. (Going in and coming out)

I agree that bike course is great fun and congratulations on the 5k PR.

Methinks you need to head out and do an open 5k as an "A" race and update your time though
