Pre-race routine:

We were up at 5:00 and had breakfast in the hotel. The staff at the Hampton Inn were terrific and set breakfast out early for all the racers. I had a bagel w/ peanut butter and hot chocolate.
My stomach was pretty messed up (not characteristic of me at all, so I was a little concerned) Got to the race with no problems and set up my transition area. the gal next to me was doing her first race and was taking up way to much space, but I remember that so just made a little square for myself. The the trips to the icky porta potties started. Went three times before my wave went out.
Swim
  • 30m 52s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Typical me stayed to the back and side. Had to get past a couple breast-strokers (a little frustrating) and just swam.

Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

I put the elastic laces on my clip-ins the night before the race and it was a good call, easy on, easy off. My only problem was when my bike peddle got stuck on my neighbors milk crate, grrr!
What would you do differently?:

Banned milk crates????
Bike
  • 1h 14m 4s
  • 17.5 miles
  • 14.18 mile/hr
Comments:

I worked hard and used my gears well, but lack of training reared it's ugly head.

Transition 2

Comments:

I'm a good transitioner ;)
Run
  • 41m 28s
  • 3.4 miles
  • 12m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

I was sure when I looked at my watch and saw that if I finished my run in 35 min I could = last years time, that I would. But...lack of training had it's effect and I didn't.

Post race
Warm down:

So, I knew that this wouldn't be a great race, but I went out planning on having fun. What I learned is...it's not fun to do a race you haven't sufficiently trained for. It was a hard lesson, but a good one.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training!

I agree ... that transition is too crowded for milk crates.  Buckets, maybe?    Good race and congrats!

Hi KLynne!  I'm sorry it wasn't the race you had hoped for, but we always put our kids first (as we should), so I'm amazed you have time to train at all!  Before you know it, they'll be grown and you'll have plenty of time to train.  Don't ever kick yourself for being with them instead of training -- they'll always remember you were there.

It was so nice meeting you and Susan in person on Saturday!

I think we did great considering the lack of training. As always,so glad that you were with me for this race. Sort of missed having the family there when we finished. We will be good at the Patriot!

Looks like you had a good race. I think a few of us had some training issues this summer, but life gets in the way sometimes. You had fun, right? That is what it is all about. Nice job.
