I cant believe it is only one month away. This will be my first half. So who else is in? Any tips or info for this course? Any tips for a first half IM?

How is the sun on the swim. I see it is out and back in essence. Tinted or clear goggles?

I think I am going to drive up on Labor Day to preview the bike course. I've ordered a 12-27 cassette to replace my 11-23 on my new bike so I can at least spin my legs at a decent cadence slogging up the hills

I am in. This is not only my first HIM but also my second triathlon ever. I'm really smart like that. Sprint last year. HIM this year.

Let us know what the course is like. Take pictures.I have heard rolling to almost flat.  It doesn't matter to me since the bike is my weakest link so I will suck either way.

Let me know what the lake looks like too. I had spent most of the summer thinking I was swimming in a river but Steph recently brought me up to speed that it is a lake. Good news that it is out and back. It won't seem so infinitely long to me then.

I am going on the waiting list tomorrow morning.  I think I will be able to sneak in!

I did the event last year and it was well put on.  The swim is a triangle with the first leg directly into the sun.  I wore tinted goggles because they were the only ones I had.  The swim should be wet suit legal again.

The bike is really fast the first half and then it seemed like the roads got pretty rough and the wind kicked in pretty bad.  There are some rolling hills on the course so don't be fooled into thinking it is pancake flat like most of SC.

The run is not that bad at all.  Very flat on an open stretch of highway (HOT..NO SHADE).  You do turn off into a park area that has some shade on it around the 3 and 9 mile marks (2 Loop Course).

The finish is straight up a hill so when you hear the cheering beginning, save just a little bit of energy for the last 200 yards.

Great event, support and organization.

I hope I make it in with the waiting list...I CAN'T BELIEVE I FORGOT TO SIGN UP!

If I make it up I would love to meet some of the fellow BTers

I have signed up for this race and it will also be my first HIM.  I have done 2 triathlons so far with the latest being the Calloway Gardens tri over Labor Day.  I am looking forward to the race and from what I have heard here, it sounds like a good course.

You can do a relay at most races.  But you have to put your own team together.

Hey Project,

I am in Gainesville also.  I am always looking for someone to go on a long bike ride with.

I know Ocktoberfest started this weekend, so tell the truth, did your "refill" at the Wurst House.

No on either.  You will find that you are in the minority with the wetsuit thing though. I did not wear a wetsuit last year either (although that race convinced me to get one). You will be among plenty of road bikes.

James,

Did not even know Okterberfest started this weekend and was wondering why the traffic was thicker than normal.  I should have thought to refill at the Wurst House...it would have made the hills on the way home more interesting.

Nat,

No wet suit for me either.  Lanier actually feels warmer that the pool I swim in so it will be interesting to see how Lake Greenwood feels.  The warm weather lately should help.  I also ride on a road bike with clip on aero bars and  I bet you'll see a large mix of road bilkes and tri bikes.

The water temp was actually nice last year- in the 70s, and felt great considering air temps were in the 50's. You just wont enjoy the speed/bouyancy advantage a wetsuit offers, but you will save a few seconds in transition

Nat-

You'll be fine.  The water isn't cold enough to need a wet suit.  It's cold enough that you are allowed to wear one.  We did John Tanner sprint this year and Steph didn't wear her wet suit and she was fine.  btw,  the wet suit helps bad swimmers a lot more then good swimmers.  Since you are a good swimmer it's no big deal.
