Subject: Half Marathon, Halfway there?
Hi guys, I just found out today that there is a half marathon an hour from my location in oct., the rock and roll SJ half marathon. I haven't really raced a half marathon before, just 5ks and 10ks. The other day, I've upped my base to 8 miles and still feeling a bit good after. The race event is about 5 weeks away. I'm planning on concentrating running on the month of september (already joined the sept run challenge) and have a goal at a minimum of 45 miles. Will this be enough 'training' and conditioning of my body for a half marathon? What do you guys think? It seems like a fun thing to do and I'd like to run it, but I'm worried that a 5 week conditioning for a race might not be enough? Any suggestions, tips, anecdotes? Thank you

Not a whole lot to go on in your logs, but I did want to comment that 45 miles in a month prior to a half marathon does NOT seem like adequate training. Maybe 45 miles per WEEK would be more appropriate.

Cool

Get a half marathon training plan (Hal Higdon's plans are popular) and see if the last five weeks look doable to you.

I have a half marathon on Oct 11 and the last 5 weeks of my plan call for 60+ miles. Since we are on the same Sept. challenge team, increase your goal and start running!  Okay, maybe not but checking a training plan to see if it's doable is great advice.

Since we’re on different September challenge teams, I think you should increase your goals to unrealistic levels then fail.

Really though, what is your goal in the race.  If you’d be happy to just finish maybe with some walking.  Then 5 weeks with only a 10% volume increase per week will definitely get you there.

If you want to finish strong having run the whole time with a smile on your face and not take 3 or 4 days to recover, I’m not sure 5 weeks is enough.  Ramping up running mileage too quickly is a great way to get injured.

Good Luck!

I say its totally do-able.  From your log, looks like you already have some decent running speed & endurance.  If you can run 8 miles now, you can get there.  Start doing a long run every week and increasing the distance of that run.  Even if you increase it just a mile a week, you can get up to a 12 mile training run, and that is plenty.  I have done halfs with training up to a 10 or 11 mile run and felt fine through the race.

As another post said, just keep in mind not to increase your total mileage per week by much more than 10%.  So, if you run 20 miles total this week, run 22 miles next week.  Otherwise you are inviting injury.

Since its your first half-marathon, you shouldn't be too concerned about a time goal.  Have fun and enjoy it and use as a benchmark to improve on your next one.

It's hard to give any specific advice without any information about your training, however in general if an athlete is well trained to run a 10k, they should be able to get into okay half marathon shape in five weeks.

However, are you looking at a monthly or weekly goal of 45miles?  If that is a weekly goal then I would say that you should have little difficulty in running the race.  If it is a monthly goal, you will be running less than 13 miles per week which is not going to have you in good half marathon shape.

Thank you everyone for your input! Just to clarify, I have a goal of 45 miles for the month.

I'm kind on the fence before posting this, but now I know what to do! I'll see how I feel like during september and since registering for it is not until the end of september (and hope it doesn't fill up), I can gauge if my training and miles is enough for the race. Inviting injury is definitely not that appetizing especially when school is starting to kick in as well. Thanks guys.
