I'm waffling on whether to do the oly or the sprint (or neither) on Oct. 5 at Bonelli Park...did the sprint last year. Anyone here planning on doing either the "BOD" or "Steamboat" next month?

I'm a maybe on the "BOD" race.  I probably won't decide until a few days before.

I'm in the same boat-I may do the BOD, but won't decide til it gets closer. I've also considered the OC Tri which is I think one week before (and the pumpkinman, which is 2 weeks later).

Anyone have a website for this? I thought it was just an oly. I didn't realize there was a sprint.

Not just a sprint, but a pretty short one, at that: 300m/8.5 mi/2.5 mi

http://www.trievents.com/events/2008_Bonelli_Olympic_Distance_Triat...

Only two caveats: The sprint run course is mostly trails and the bike course...well, it's Bonelli...generally rolling, one lap, crappy pavement, only real flat section is by the airport.

I did the sprint last year and won my AG despite falling on the bike dismount and breaking my wrist, so I think it's fair to say it isn't a hypercompetitive field...

Thanks for the info. I'm considering it. The only thing that would deter me is the bike ride. I did two laps for the Turkey Tri but had to walk parts of the hills on lap 2. Last year I could do one lap, but this year I've done less hill climbs and doubt I could. We'll see!

I did the Renegade version last April.  It was a mountain bike race and trail run.  Only a sprint but BRUTAL.  Several parts where walking the bike was only option and I saw a lot of people walking portions of the run.

I remember my friend saying, "I thought these were going to be fun...that was miserable"

But now that I think about it, I suppose I will do it again next year!

thanks for this info. Hearing that the roads are crappy-I won't do that again after my LA Tri this last weekend. Maybe Carp, pumpkinman, or wait til next season.

There's a section of pavement on the south side of the course that is quite rough for about 3/4 mile.  And there is some bumpy stuff on the north side on Puddingstone, but it's not as bad as the section on the south side.  The rest of the pavement seemed okay relative to the two rough sections when I rode the course last Saturday.  Also, there is some climbing on this bike course (not an atrocious amount), so you'll want to put some hill work in your training leading up to the race.

10-day weather forecast currently showing showers on race day.    Dang, I hope that's WRONG.

SevenZulu is right about the rough road on southside of the course. It is when you are going up the small hill back into the park. Rattles my dentures everytime!

Just another forwarning.....if they are taking you across the dam during the race.......after coming off the dam, there is short down hill portion followed by a SHARP right hand turn back onto the main street that circles Bonelli. As soon as you as make the right hand (sharp) turn, it is an immediate up hill. So prep your gears so that you are not in too big of a gear to get over that little nusance!

If it was a closed road, it wouldn't be too big of an issue, but the road is open to traffic both ways. Most likely there will be volunteers there to tell you to slow down.

Just be careful and have a safe ride!

I rode the south side of the course on Via Verde today.  Be aware that there is currently about a two foot wide trench filled with gravel cut perpendicularly all the way across the roadway.  I forget the exact spot, but it's at some point after the downhill and before you climb up towards the 57 freeway.  I hope they pave this little project before the race.  You will hit this with some speed, just be heads up in case the project remains unfinished by next Sunday.

Also, the weather forecast now looks much better for Sunday -- sunny, low about 60, high 88.  Early morning this will be ideal weather.

I did two loops of the Oly bike course on Saturday.  Nothing too gnarly - as mentioned previously, some nasty pockmarked pavement coming off Fairplex onto Via Verde for about the first 1/3 mile (which is also a slow climb).  Another decent climb for the last 1/3 mile up Via Verde to San Dimas Rd.  Most of San Dimas Rd is a nice, high-speed downhill with a cycling lane (I hit about 42 mph, effortlessly) with a right under the overpass at the bottom, turning into a few more slow climbs.  The rest of the bike course is relatively flat.  On its own, nothing scary, but three loops, after swimming a mile will certainly make it a little more formidable, especially if there are any major headwinds along Puddingstone/airport area.  Also worth noting that if the roads are open around the airport/Fairplex (I seem to recall that its not a closed course), there's not a lot of space for cyclists, so be careful.  Good luck to everyone...

So who's gonna be there Sunday? For the Oly? The sprint? Just hanging out or jockstrapping?

I'm in for the Oly with my wife, Liz, along on Sherpa detail.

Still undecided.  I'm on some meds that instruct me to avoid dehydration.  I know I'll struggle to take in enough fluids on the bike, so I'm just not sure if it's worth risking.  If I had a behind-the-seat bottle holder I'd be in better shape.  Guess I could just drink a gallon before the swim.
