So TS HAnna wreaked havoc on the Patriot's weekend and my A race, first oly is now a du.  I have attempted du's in training a couple times but never raced one.  I know that I need to be conservative on run #1, ride like my life depends on it and attack run #2 hard.  What about nutrition?  I had a great oly nutrition plan but am not sure how to do it for a du?  I have a hydration belt I was planning on using for the 10K at the end, a bunch of gels and some Optimum bars...Heed and water bottles available to me.  How do I space these out so I'm not sloshing too much or too hungry?

How long is run #1?  Unless it's a huge distance disproportionall long (-er than 2 or 3 k) I wouldn't alter your nutrition plan.

I wish they would tell us what the run distances are.  It would make it a lot easier to plan out nutrition.

My first Oly (a different Oly than Zipp1's) is now a du as well. Except that I've been having these nasty issues with my hip or ITB or something. So extra running is not sounding like much fun. Plus, I've never done, nor have I trained for a duathlon. NOt sure what to expect with the bike thrown into the mix. I can run the entire combined distance no problem, assuming there is no pain.

Thoughts? I'm p*ssed because this is probably going to kill my ranking. I was hoping for a nice MOP finish, with my swim and run, since this is a local race, and my swim is good, and run is decent enough, compare to all the slow folk out there. The only thing that really screws me is the bike.

Bradford - 2008-09-06 4:08 PM 1st run distance is 1.75 miles

Where are you finding this from?  It's not on the web site.

Are you sure it's a true Du? The website just says there will be no swim. To me, that means you'll start on the bike.

Hmmm... how would they do that logistically, tho? Maybe they have to start with a run.

My first two attempts at a triathlon several years ago became duathlons due to rough surf on raceday (and I come from a swim background and didn't really train at all for the first one, so the swim was the only leg I was ready for), so I understand what you are feeling.  The only thing you can do for the first run is take it easy, especially if you've never run the combined distance of the two runs in a workout.  If it's a short run that takes the same amount of time, if not less, than you would have been in the water, not taking in nutrition, it shouldn't really change things nutrition-wise.  Maybe have a bit of water at an aid station during the first run if it's longer than say 2 miles, but other than that, just listen to your body.

In cases with canceled swims, they seem to always start with another run (I don't know of any that haven't.  Maybe there are some?).  A mass start on the bike sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

There is one tri that I do that has the tradition of a mass bike start.  Probably about 75 per wave and it's not a disaster. Also after the first half-mile the climbing starts so that thins down the packs right away.

That said, for a larger race it may not be practical.

I did the Breezy Point Triathlon in Norfolk last year when it got changed from a tri to a du. TS Barry wa rolling through and the water was rough. It was windy, cold, and poured through the whole race. It was my first time racing on my tri bike, and my first time biking in the rain since I wass a kid. All things considered, I did pretty well in the race (my second "tri"). What they did for that one was start us out in our waves on the run, we ran our 5K, did the 20K bike, and then had a 100 meter dash to the finish line. People were crossing in the helmets, in their bike shoes, in bare feet... anything. The weather was so bad, that once people finished, racers collected their bikes, checked out of transition, and went home. One of the strangest races I have ever done.

Still no word on what the plan is for the race tomorrow. I think there are a number of different options and we won't know until the morning, which is maddening.

This was also going to be my first Olympic and I am very disappointed. I haven't had the time to train like I wished I could have, but I felt like I could do it. I wanted to do it. I'm looking for another Olympic to do this month, that I can hopefully fit in with my schedule, because I hate to let the training go to waste.

At least we have a race. And it won't be like the race I had the last time my tri turned into a du. And I realized a little while ago, that without a swim, I'll have some pretty nice transition times.
