The lake house was a lot cheaper than a hotel. There were all different sizes available, we just had a lot of people, so we had a bigger house. I used vrbo.com but there are other vacation rental websites out there. Not only was it cheaper than a hotel, but it was great to have a kitchen so you could save $$ that way as well. And, of course, we had a blast hanging out before/after the race. Ours was right on a bluff over lake michigan, and if you need a place that sleeps 10 or so, I can give you the number.

Man I wish I would've read all the negative race reports before I impulsed registered for this. I just assumed it would be a top notch event with the "Ironman" name behind it.

With that said, somebody, anybody please tell me there are going to be changes made this year and I shouldn't let all the neg. reports bring me down. This is a pretty big bummer.

You didn't waste your money. There is no perfect race...you can find positives and negatives in all races. The more you race, you will find that swims getting canceled are part of the sport. Everyone gets bummed when the swim is canceled but there is nothing you can do.

Train hard and go to Steelhead with the mind set you are going to have fun and you will enjoy yourself.

He's right. I was just really really really bummed about the swim. They took the thing I'm best at, and eliminated it from the race entirely. Then they took the thing I'm worst at, and made me do it twice. It was enough to make a girl cry. Frown

But... apparently the riptides were bad. So at least we're all still here to complain about it. Wink

I didn't notice anything regarding the pavement. Seemed OK to me. Although I was pretty busy with my own issues on the bike...

Heh. See? Who has time to worry about the pavement?

Whizzzzz - you are so dang funny!  I agree that the beach house was awesome not only financially, but primarily because the people that stayed there, and those that visited, were fantastic.

I am thinking about using this as a warm up race for IMWI. Coach AJ recommeneds one 6 weeks out and that fits this build. I like racine and so I am debating. He recommends 2 hims but I think they are too close together to do both.

I am thinking about doing it again in 2009 and I would recommend it to anyone who likes larger races.  The bike course was not entirely smooth, but with midwest winter freeze/thaw it is hard to find a 56 mile stretch where you do not encounter some bad roads.  The roads were pretty crowded with people, but I love the craziness of big events.  I think it makes a very good A race at the HIM distance.
