Age Group Rank = 17/25
Pre-race routine:

Stood in line at the port-o-potty! Got a case of food poisoning on friday which hadn't subsided by race day. Spent a lot of pre race time in the toidy!
Event warmup:

Swam about 300 yds of the course, stretched, and swam another 100 yds. Peed in my wetsuit for good luck!
Swim
  • 10m 22s
  • 500 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was crowded! This was definately a contact sport. Purposely tried to slow down on the first half of the swim so I didn't blow up, but I was catching people anyway.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have went a bit harder on the second half of the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Was running into tansition and I heard a volunteer say "watch out for the" and then I went down hard, tripping in a pothole in the pavement. Cut my toe and bruised my hip. It was my own fault for not seeing it, but I think they could have put a little orange spray paint around it to make it more visible for those of us having difficuly just trying to breathe and run at the same time.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so clumsy. I also needed to be a bit more purposeful. I don't think I was mentally sharp in planning my transitions.
Bike
  • 50m 13s
  • 15.53 miles
  • 18.56 mile/hr
Comments:

This was the first time I have competed in an event and had not been familiar with the course. Knowing the course would have helped me pace myself a bit better, but overall I'm happy with my performance. I managed to get my bike over 40mph on the descents, which was a new best for me.
What would you do differently?:

Pre ride the course. More hill work!
Transition 2
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

So-so transition. Had to ask for directions to the run, as it wasn't clear which way to go.
What would you do differently?:

More transition practice
Run
  • 32m 13s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

The run started out all uphill, and my legs were burning! Had to stop and walk for about a minute. The middle section of the run was on wooded trails up and down some killer ravines. I was thinking to myself that this would be a good xterra course! Tripped and twisted my ankle on some tree roots. I was tired and clumsy all day! I witnessed several people on the side of the trail loosing there breakfast! This was a tough course. I had a descent sprint to the finish line, finishing as strong as I could. I definatley didn't leave anything on the course.
What would you do differently?:

Again, more hill work!
Post race
Warm down:

Gasp for air, watch people blow chow after they crossed the finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need more hill training. Pre race nutrition was very poor as I was dealing with a lingering case of food poisoning.

Great job Timmeh - PR even with the few little mishaps along on the way.  Nicely done.  Oh, and I'm kinda jealous that you managed to pee in your wetsuit. I haven't een able to get myself to do that yet - I suffered for it later.  :0

Yikes, sounds like you had yourself quite a challenge there. Great job despite the difficulties. Having raced just a couple of days after having food poisining myself, I know how unpleasant that must have been. Well done!

Congrats on the race, looks like it was a pretty good one for you.  I drove the course the night before and it looked tough...would have liked to have ridden the whole course but it wasn't meant to be.  Still, from what I heard very challenging.  Nice job.

Sounds like a brutal course!  Wow, and some war wounds to boot!

Great job!

Great job!  Way to tough it out given all the potentially bad stuff that was thrown at you!
