Let's make a list of things that your child(ren) should know how to do.  The list should run from 4 years old to 12 years old.  Assume they know how use the potty.

- throw a ball

- catch a ball

- ride a bike

- swim

- cook - progressively more difficult as age increases.  Ranging from bowl of cereal to making a cake/cookies from scratch.

- sew.  Boys & girls.  Buttons and patches at a minimum.

- whistle.  And when not to whistle.

- knife safety.

- gun safety.  Even if you don't have a gun in the house.

How/when it's (in)appropriate to approach unfamiliar dogs both familiar and unfamiliar--even (perhaps especially) if you don't have a dog.

Manners,  Courtesy, Respect for their elders (not just mom and dad).

That TV and movies are just that, fake.  Real Guns and Sharp objects and car crashes are final, no time out or do over.  (That needs to be reworded.)

There are consiquiences to actions (both good and bad)

You can't win everything all the time

Say 'yes sir/no sir', 'yes ma'am/no ma'am' and refer to adults as Mr./Ms. First name or last name

To write 'thank you notes' for gifts, sleepovers, etc.

bradleyd3 - 2008-10-02 3:54 PM T Say 'yes sir/no sir', 'yes ma'am/no ma'am'

That's a regional thing, I think - esp. in the South, it seems. Saying "yes, please" or "no thank you" is perfectly acceptable, imho, or a simple "yes" or "no" if the question doesn't call for "please" or "thank you". As is making direct eye contact and speaking up and speaking clearly when you are addressing an adult. I think that's more important. To show that you are being attentive to what you are being asked. Most kids these days just sort of look away and mumble.

obviously there is a lot we need to teach our kids.  Bottom line...if our kids grow up confident and with high self esteem I'll feel pretty good about our parenting.
