Really runny nose after swimming?

Extreme Veteran 438  |  Subject: Really runny nose after swimming?Anyone else have this problem. It seems on my swim days that a few hours after I am done swimming I have a REALLY runny nose, like having a cold but you cant stop whats coming out of your nose (sorry I know that sounds gross). I have noticed a few times and I think its always happening on swim days...not sure if its something I should go get checked out or if its something you more veteran athletes might have run into. |

More liable to happen when I'm flip turning because my technique stinks so badly. Mainly I get congested, but sometimes runny/drainage. I get better results/less issues when I'm focusing on blowing a majority of the air out of my nose and just a little out of my mouth. This tends to keep the sinus area pretty cleared out. |

It is more like water being stored somewhere and all of hte sudden it comes out.... at onece in unexpected places.. I have been embarrassed by it a couple of times.. But once it happens, it is all over. weird!!! |

I am getting it too and have traced it to the chlorine. This past week, they added a bit too much and my sinuses not only would not stop runnig but at the same time they dried out. |

Not to be gross (ok, it is gross so look away if you are fragile), but I usually have to jump out of the pool and spit-out a wad of nasty mucus at least once during my swim. All that breathing/blowing out the nose really clears the gunk out and it's got to be expelled somehow. |

Nose runs uncontrollably, then it blocks for like 3 days and disrupts my sleep. I'm trying a nose plug tomorrow. I'm wondering if pools are using different chemicals, although I've experience the same thing in open water swims in the ocean without the blocked sinus part. Tommy |

It's encouraging to hear that the nose plugs work. I got one from TYR, and the way I figure it, noone is looking underwater, and if they do, they assume the risks! Yeah it's geeky, but Austin Powers wore one, so I can too (at least I think he did in the synchronized swimming bit in the intro). And hey, he is one groovy cat! ;-) |

I have never experience a runny nose after swimming (except if I had a cold and had a runny nose before swimming too). But I consider myself to be a good swimmer and never get water up my nose or anything. I suspect it may mean you are alergic or sensative to the cholrine or whatever they put in the pool. |

Extreme Veteran 596 ma | Subject: RE: Really runny nose after swimming? esparkhu, it happens in open water swims as well. based on what others have said in the past, it generally has to do with the sinuses being irritated. it would be consistent that if you are a very efficient swimmer, letting no water in (ie, irritants)...you don't suffer the consequences. just a guess..... |
