Subject: Hip/leg pain 1 week from marathon help!

Ok i have this pain in my hip and the upper left side of my left buttox. I have been injury free up until my last run on Sunday.  The pain started out minimal and increased during the run.  I don't have much pain while sitting, and some while walking.  But it hurts when my left leg hits the ground during a run.  Has anyone had this pain before?  Any advice? What sucks is i have my first marathon this Sunday! If the pain is like it was on my last run then i won't last 10 miles.  Any advice or suggestions on what this is and what to do about it would be very appreciated.

Thanks,

If your logs are near-accurate, my main advice is next time you decide to do a marathon don't do long runs so far out of your "comfort" zone (and generally run more).  You've been playing injury roulette so it's not too surprising that something went wrong.

Only advice I can offer now is to rest it.  Probably not what you want to hear with your marathon planned for Sunday.  Good luck.

Where in your hip does it hurt? I only ask cuz I started having some issues that sound similar, at least from the vague description of "my hip hurts" - cuz that's all I could really say at first. Depending on where it hurts, some stretching/foam roller action might help. I had some pain sort of in my butt too - since then, I've done a lot of the "pigeon" pose, which is a yoga pose (google it), as well as various other glute stretches - that got it pretty well. The one where you lay on your back, bring your opposite knee in and cross the leg that hurts over the other leg to stretch those muscles was great too.

Get thee to a Rolfer or active-release therapist early this week; otherwise, rest, stretch, massage, and ice.

Oh, and if the pain is like it was on your last run, you might want to consider pulling out of the mary early...26.2 miles can really exacerbate an injury and could have you on the sidelines much longer than you'd like.

Hopefully, it's something that just a little TLC will help.

Have you thought about going to see a massage therapist for a deep tissue massage?

Seeing that you aren't really sure what the pain is, it's hard to say what to do for it.

At least you are only a week out, so you can rest all week and see where you are at the day of the marathon.

Good luck.

Sounds like upper IT Band to me. Try not to make it worse, maybe stay off the bike until after the marathon. I go and visit an ART (Active Release) when I have problems like this; I don't have an easy cure though. I also try and keep it (the injury) warm during my workouts.
Hope this helps.

Could be ITB, could be high hamstring strain or pull, could be any number of issues.

If it's a strain/pull, rest is about the best you can do right now.

Thanks guys....Yeah i don't know how it happened.  I honestly don't think it was training to hard to fast.  I hadn't biked in a while and hit it decently hard on saturday.  So i might have just strained it.  I'm going to ice it and rest this week. Maybe go see a specialist today or tomorrow if i can find time.

The vast majority never think they are training too hard or too fast.

I would guess possibly piriformis syndrome by your description.  Google it and see if those are your symptoms.  If it is more towards the outside of your leg then the butt then maybe IT band.  If it is a pain in the butt (literally) then the piriformis is a common problem.  Of course the treatment is the same as most injuries.... I pulled my glute muscle in my triathlon in July. It manifested itself in pain right behind my hip bone (up at the point) and then down into my hiney. I rested for 3 months because everytime I took a step it caused pain. After 3 months it was no better, I had developed tendonitis. Long story short I ended up with a steroid shot from a Sports Med Dr., PT and Active release massage therapy. By far the massage therapy has been the best thing ever - so get to one quick and hopefully you can avoid the long road to recovery I have been on.

If you have a roller stick or foam roller massage the heck out of it. Look up ITB band and glute stretches on the internet and see if they help.

My massage therapist recommended "The Whartons' Stretch Book" I do the stretches at night before bed and they have really helped me stay loose.

Good luck and let us know how you do!

I honestly don't think it was training to hard to fast.

I'm just going by your logs, but I see weekly mileage (and long run) of:
8 (3)
16 (7)
16 (6)
3 (3)
27 (9)
30 (16)
10 (5)
20 (13)
16 (15)
30 (10)
31 (18)
22 (9)
21 (9)
36 (22)
15 (6)

That's simply a relatively high risk running pattern (i.e., pushing volume and long run distance without an established base).  For someone with years of running prior to this, they might get away with that no problem.  For somebody getting ready for their first marathon, they're probably betting against the house.

i concur with all the ART posts. i had some hip pain myself while training for my first marathon coming up in december. went to a chiropracter/art therapist 2 weeks post initial pain and am MUCH better. not perfect, but he did wonders. was able to run a half marathon 3 days after his treatment with little to no pain. will go to him again prior to marathon. big believer in ART therapy, it helped me.

You might want to re-examine your training paces as well. Your recent half marathon time indicates a 3:26 marathon (7:54 pace), for which McMillan suggests long runs in the 8:24 to 9:24 range, not the 8-minute pace at which you tried to run your 22-miler.

I understand i haven't trained for this marathon the "standard" way.  And i've had a lot of races in there thats why my mileage hasn't been consistant.  I have been a runner for 8 years so i have a good base.  I just haven't ever done a marathon.

The thing is i did a 18 mile run the day after a tough off road duathlon.  I did the 22 mile run 1.5 weeks ago.  And i ran last week after the 22 mile run and i was fine.  I was a little tired, but nothing hurt for any of my runs after the 22 miler except for a week after.  I honestly think i did something that day on my bike or that evening when i was playing golf.  I don't think it had to do with my running.

Anyway i know my mileage is low thats why i'm being conservative on my pace.  Thanks for all the suggestions.  I actually feel much better today after a lot of TP ball therapy and icing.  Hopefully it doesn't hit me at mile 10 and i can't finish.

Quite possible.  But I'll bet with the house and only suggest you at least consider it in future training.  Regardless, best of luck!
