OK...since this was a reverse, and they have yet to add a reverse tri race report to the templets, I will just tell the story here so you don't have to read from the bottom up.
Up at 4am, and out the door by 4:45. It was raining, lighting, and as I drove the 45 miles to Goodyear through the center of Phoenix, it absolutely poured. Nice. Got to the race site and not too many people were there yet. Got a good spot on a rack that would only require me to walk about 5 steps in my bike shoes. The run was shortened from 2miles to 1.5 because the RD got his 4x4 stuck in the mud on the course, and decided we didn't have to do that .5 mile out and back. So we started in a cement water retention ditch that had water and sand in the bottom of it, then you have to run up out of it onto a gravel path that becomes cement. My goal for the run was under 12 min because that would give me an 8min mile, which is good for me. 1/3 of the way into the run I passed an older woman with blonde piggy tails and a local tri club suit on. Then at the 2/3 point she passed me, but seemed like she gave it all she had to catch me, so I decided to re-pass her. From that point on it was ON LIKE DONKEY KONG!! She kept trying to pass me, but I kept matching her stride for stride. As we came into the last stretch she sprints, so I sprint and would not let her pass me. She was seriously getting pissed off!! We jump on our bikes, and I really don't pay attention to how far back she was from me, I just quickly put my bike shoes on and took off. With 1/4 of a mile to go on the bike course, she passes me. We leap frog just a bit, then I decide to just hang onto her tail. She was about hyperventalating but she was SOO not going to let me pass her again. So I followed her into T2, and actually beat her to the dimount line becuase she dismounted too early, but no timing chip mat there. Boo!! This is where I started laughing because as she was sprinting toward the pool, me right behind her, I KNEW she would smoke me in the pool and finally get me! If ONLY I could swim! Haha!!! I jumped in the pool and I SWEAR it was not water....it was clear molasses!! It was so warm and thick!! I tried best I could to just swim, never hanging on the sides, using good form and good breathing, but I was slow as hell!!! OH well. This is what you get for not swimming since SOMA, and for weeks prior to that as well. I ended up with 4th in my AG, and my nemisis (who appeared to be a very nice lady at the awards ceremony) took 1st in the 45-59 AG, and 6th place overall. So good for her! I just hope to be rocking it that hard when I am in that AG!!!! Luckily the rain stayed at bay during the race. It sprinkled off and on right up until race start, and then again afterward. This cbike ourse was a 4 mile city block, so you had a 90 degree turn at every mile. FUN! Especially on wet pavement! But I would rather slow a bit then bite it on a corner. As always...a fun race.
