In '08 it was just getting off my bike.  I knew at that point a finish was more than likely going to happen.  Mechanical failures were no longer an option.  Plus the fan support and everyone yelling your name at the beginning of the run is phenomenal.

The Finish line!

Of course, there are so many spots that are awesome.  Verona 2x is awesome.  Up that straight hill (TDF like) and even Old Sauk Pass before it.  Winding down the area where they put the bails of Hay out...nothing like going 30+ and not pedaling.  The Helix up and down (t1, t2).  Running down/up state street.

I think the only part that isn't fun is that hill (Baskom?) on the run that you do twice.  That thing sucks

Best part is the Cross Plaines aid station...but I'm biased

Midtown road is awful which is why I like it....Running up State Street on the second loop is awesome with the capital building all lit up...I plan on seeing during the daylight this time

I enjoyed the eerie silence running inside Camp Randall.  Verona is fun.  The big rollers outside of Mt Horeb, State Street, etc, etc.

The best part by far was going in and out of the helix.   You totally feel like a superstar

Has anyone ever seen someone walk their bike up the helix after 112 miles on the bike because they don't have the leg strength to climb?  Just wondering... I don't want it to be me.

Last year I did see a guy walk his bike up the ramp.  Not because he was tired, because he had a flat.  Felt bad for him.  But atleast he got the flat on the helix and not out on the course.

I didn't notice, but I wouldn't worry about what other racers think. You'll get the same amount of support from the crowd whether you walk your bike up or ride it up. The crowd support on the helix was amazing.

I saw a guy who had a flat and was running w/ his bike back to the terrace from that last turn by olin park.  Mustve figured it would be faster to run in that change his flat there....

I am with running2far- Cross Plaines is the best! I was laughing so hard this year that I had tears in my eyes. But I guess that is what seeing a pink bunny in a blue barrel will do for you.

And for the run, I also agree that the best part is running towards the Capital all lit up. I plan on seeing in the dark again this year but 1-1.5 hours earlier than last year.

I wouldn't worry too much about the helix. For me riding up was quite easy and it didn't feel like a hill. Now if it wasn't for the idiot who tried to remove his shoes while climbing and weaving all over the place, I likely wouldn't have even remembered having to do it.

Running up it was another story. I hate running without something on my feet so the helix just seemed long.

Im guessing if you don thave the strength to bike up the helix you are going to have one LONG 26.2 mile run- just sayin

Observatory Drive not much fun... In college we used to ride up and down it inebriated in the snow.

Oh I already think that marathon is going to be long, but I am okay with that.  Going to do the best I can.  That is why I started training months ago

Could've joined me while I was up it and back in the -6 degrees F w/windchill during my 2 hour run tonight.  It wasn't that bad actually.  Just the hands got numbed.

Pam,

You will be SO happy to be finally done with the bike, you won't even feel the helix.  You'll have no trouble at all riding up it.  Trust me.

It's the rest of the 112 miles you need to focus on.  The helix is nothing compared to all the real hills you will conquer during the ride.

:-)

Thanks for the note.  I wish I lived closer to the site because I am not sure if I will really get to see the hills till either a few days before with a driving experience or race day.  Can anyone give me a perspective like how many feet climb over this long of a distance?

I think its something like 6500ft over the bike course.  No really big hills, just lots n lots of rollers.  Make sure youre derailleurs are working good!

If you go to  http://www.ironmanwisconsin.com/bike.html  this will give you a good Idea of what the climbs are like.  Cool And you can even compare the climbs in all the North American Ironmans.  Pretty cool.
