Pre-race routine:

Alarm went off at 4:50, got dressed and let the dog out. Made coffee and ate a bowl of oatmeal. I met 3 other friend just outside of town, so we could carpool and follow one another. The race was about an hour from B'ham and none of us had been there before, plus Rick hadn't pre-registered.
Event warmup:

Unloaded the bikes and set up our gear in the transition area. Very primitive 'camp' for adults with special needs. Stretched after signing in and did a short 'jog' to wake up!

Run
  • 19m 15s
  • 2.1 miles
  • 09m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

I was please with the first leg of the race and when I reached the transition area a race official told me I was the 6th female. :)
What would you do differently?:

Too warm. Had on tri shorts with pants on top and a long sleeve bike shirt (thick)
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Grabbed a cup of gatorade at aid station on way in and held it by my teeth as I got shoes off and on. Beat Rick out of T1, we racked our bikes beside one another and I laughingly called him a slow poke, told him I was going on because I knew he would pass me on the bike later, sure enough he did.

Had to wipe little oak leaves off my socks before putting on my bike shoes, dealt with this again after bike.
Bike

Comments:

Didn't keep up with splits and T-times.
Ran off the road on one sharp turn back into the camp and nearly hit the gate, now that was smooth!

Left foot went numb(especially the ball) about 1/2 into the ride and didn't 'wake-up' until about 1/2 way into my run/jog.
What would you do differently?:

More hydration, drank all my water bottle and wanted more. I need another cage.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Bike shoes off, stripped my running pants off, brushed leaves off socks, slipped running shoes on and headed out. HURTING!!
Run
  • 23m
  • 2.1 miles
  • 10m 57s  min/mile
What would you do differently?:

Wish I hadn't walked.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank lots, goofed off with friends while waiting on Judi and Pam. Rick beat me by 9 minutes overall, and the girls were well over 2 hours coming in.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to build up my base and no training or experience running on trails definitely limited me to a certain degree, plus all the hills.

Event comments:

I felt like I gained a lot of experience and realize I need to train more actually on the bike, increase my run distances.

My time is the over-all time, I didn't keep up with splits in and out and am not sure of actuals for the bike and 2nd run.

Course: VERY hilly trail run. It was not a maintained trail, early on the there were even some gullies from the heavy rain a few nights ago. Trail smoothed out somewhat and we ran on a heavy layer of leaves through the woods. Pushed through the hills and passed a few runners. The sun shining through the trees made nice shadows all along the path. Had to pay close attention. One hill was in a hair-pin turn and felt as though I walked up the hill, but really didn't. Pam and Judi were way behind me and Rick was in front of me.

Wind: Strong with gusts
Course: Headwinds, crosss-winds and gusts. That was fun!! :)) Tried to get a drink one time and only one hand on bike, thought I was about to be blown away. :) Very rural country roads. Passed a land-fill, several of us commented on the stench. AGAIN, very hilly. I was under the impression that there were just a few hills. It was more like only a couple of flats sections and lots of rolling hills. Came up out of the saddle about 4x, used my granny-gear for the 1st time ever on 2 hills. Passed a few riders and then the girl that one 1st in the 30-35 division and I kept passing each other then she passed me about 3/4 of the way and I couldn't get back to her. :(

Course: OMGosh!! My lower back was killing me when I got off the bike, and calves immediately started cramping on the run. BUT I knew my calves would feel better soon, but a little concerned about my back. Walked on several of the hills, very disappointing. BUT saw lots of others doing it too. The run was the exact same as the 1st run but in reverse.

Great job. And don't let Rick forget that you beat him out of T1, even if he did pass you on the bike.
