Sunny
Total Time = 1h 06m 11s
Overall Rank = 59/121
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 19/32
Pre-race routine:

Had oatmeal and a protein shake for breakfast.

Got there in plenty of time despite the early start time. The elite group started at 6:15 and it was nice to watch their swim...so smooth and graceful...and FAST! The only problem was that I forgot we started shortly after so I was in a bit of a panic before the start. Not much time to warm up and when I finally got into the pool, I realized I didn't have my goggles! I debated running to my transition bag to get them or swimming without them. The guy said "2 minutes" and I thought "I have time". I got the goggles, but jumped in the pool just before the start. A little frazzled, but at least I had them!
Event warmup:

Not much...see above!
Swim
  • 12m 22s
  • 600 meters
  • 02m 04s / 100 meters
Comments:

As one of the slow swimmers, I was assigned to a lane in the 25m pool! (the faster swimmers got to go in the 50m pool) There were 5 others in my lane so it was tough. It took me about 200m to get into any sort of rhythm. The guy in front of me was a bit slower, but I couldn't pass him. I ended up doing doggy-paddle when I ran into his legs to give him time to get ahead so I could swim again. Finally after 'tapping' his ankles a few times, he let me by at the wall. What a difference! Open water! Until I hit the next guy. All in all, I was happy with my time considering these problems getting into my rhythm.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my goggles so I could warm up a bit more.

Transition 1
  • 02m 7s
Comments:

Good transition. T-shirt got stuck while getting it on. Maybe get a top I can wear for the swim. I decided not to wear my sunglasses...don't really know why. Now I think they are lost :(
What would you do differently?:

Grab my sunglasses
Bike
  • 29m 52s
  • 16 kms
  • 32.14 km/hr
Comments:

Bike ride went very well. I got into a drafting group of 4 (it was legal for us age-groupers) for pretty much the whole ride and we worked well together. I had never really drafted with a group before...What a difference!! I couldn't believe the amount of energy saved when I was not in the front. Towards the end I felt strong and I decided to leave the group, but they easily chased me down after about 2 minutes. I then realized that I should stay with them :)
What would you do differently?:

Not try to leave my group...our pace was good
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

I got off the bike and took off my helmet. I got stopped by a monitor who told me I could not take off my helmet till I got to my bike rack. He held me there while I put it back on and had to buckle it up. A little frustrating!

I had socks this time to avoid blisters, but it did slow down my transistion as they were a pain to put on. I also had to tie my shoes...also a pain.
What would you do differently?:

Wait to take off my helmet.

Run
  • 19m 27s
  • 4 kms
  • 04m 52s  min/km
Comments:

Started running quickly and right away remembered to slow down and get into a groove. That was huge! I slowed down and felt pretty good. Tired and breathing heavy, but good. I got into a groove and decided to try and keep my pace for 3 laps and then pick it up for the 4th. That worked well. I might have been able to pick up my pace for 2 laps, but after my last race, I wanted to make sure I finished strong. Never really got thirsty and that was a big surprise after my last race. The temperature made a huge difference. Finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

MAYBE push a little more halfway through the run.
Post race
Warm down:

walked around, drank powerade (yuck) and water. stretched a little bit later (only quads, really)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim - tough to find rhythm (Although, I don't think it would have made a HUGE difference)
Run - MAYBE a little conservative.

What a great excuse to visit Guatemala! Congrats on your race.

Maybe they'll arrange a tri in Panama and we can swim across the canal.
