This is my first tri and I will admit I've only trained outside in fair weather!  Just haven't found that place in me that really wants to train in nasty weather.

Of course since this is my first tri, I told many people I was going to do one - so no backing out now!  Weather blows!

Is WARM camo hunting clothes appropriate attire for a race?!

Wes

To all in the race - good luck - stay warm, (means wear swim cap to keep hair dry) gloves on the ride and run, it is a very fun race - I will be drinking green beer on lower Greenville - good news is that the beer stays cold.

Wes, I'm in your boat too.  My boss told me today that he has it on his calendar along with his kids' basketball game and baseball practice...everyone at my gym keeps asking how my training's going and whether I'm anxious.  I wish I'd have kept my trap shut, but it's too late to take back the over-enthusiastic over-divulging to anyone within dog hearing range.  Guess we'll have to enjoy this cold & rainy First tri together...next one, will be a piece of cake!  I'll be looking out for you :-)

Best,

Cynthia.

HEY EVERYONE.   the weather doesnt' matter.. the worse it is,, just means the better stories we have to tell... in fact by sept I'm sure all of will be saying the there was ice in the pool and zero visiblity due to snow... misery loves company. right ....

Yes I've been drinking all night to be able to find the positive about this race since I'm a fair weather racer

Those folks in the AG 26-29, please be safe and go very slow on the bike and run! It is going to be very cold and slippery (black ice is very hard to see). If you must, please keep a 17mph pace on the bike and anything over 8:30 minute miles would keep you out of harms way. Really - it is not worth getting injured and ruining your tri season this early on. Other helpful hints include:

- bring hot soup into your transition areas: take some time to layer on and warm up
- make sure to put your toe warmers on your shoes just past the bike mount line
- stay well hydrated on the bike course with a quick stop at the 100's Starbucks along the course
- hug every volunteer you see - they are out there for you!
- eat about 3 cliff bars on the run to keep your energy up.

- MOST IMPORTANTLY: stop just short of the finish line to fix your hair for your photo op!

See you guys out there! I'm off to the Plano packet pickup in 1 hour!

Well I would agree to all but in your case you won't need to stop and fix your hair!!!!

I think this would also be a great strategy for folks in the male 30-34 AGInnocent

Haha, Im in this age group, but I apologize, as I wont be taking your advice! : ) Good luck TTG!!

On a serious note, I've done a pool swim Tri before but never one where its 30 degrees outside!! How are you guys going to dress? I was thinking Tri shorts and top in the pool but then what?? Do you take time to layer up in T1 or do you just say screw it and HTFU through the bike and run in your wet top and bottom?????? Curious minds wanna know!

I think the following is a sanctioned USAT outfit.  Great for keeping warm, but most of all very stylish for a Sooner....

Couldn't help it; I'm a longhorn ;-)!  Also, thanks for the advice about booking; I'm in the 26-29AG, but I'm not trying to kill myself on this first triathlon.  See you all at the finish line!

I had a friend do just that at Athens last year, and she ended up at the hospital with hypothermia.  (DNF, too.  She leaned over in T2 for her shoes but couldn't even stand up.)  Have fun, but don't be stupid.

At the very least a pair of arm warmers and gloves.  Fingers get cold fast.  In a good aero position, the wind flow onto your chest won't be terrible.  You can peel off the arm warmers once you start running, and they're much easier to carry than a jacket.

I'll probably put on a fairly waterproof windbreaker and gloves in transition.

On a good note, there should not be too much wind.

You'll definitely need to put something on in T1. Gloves for sure and something on your top. Your legs can survive for a short bike. I'll probably throw on some sort of jacket/jersey/fleece/something in T1 and gloves and just pull them off in T2.

the thing I dont' want to forget is my car key on the run....   that way once I"m done I can go back to the car, crank up the heat for a couple of minutes and change into some dry, warmer clothes... since you never know when they will open up transition to get your other stuff

Last year in Athens it was really cold, and to complicate things it was my first tri.  I remember putting on gloves, leg warmers, a cap under my helmet etc.  I really regret doing that now for what it's worth.  This year I'll HTFU and put maybe gloves on but that's it.  It's only 12 miles on the bike.

Athens was my first tri last year too, and I only put a jacket on...I wish I had put gloves on and knee warmers.  I would say if you're out to win it all and cold doesn't work you over too much, you figure it out and take some risks on how much.  If you're not looking to take the crown, be smart and put something on. It literally took me nearly 2-3 minutes to take my helmet off in T2 cause my hands were so frozen.  I was fine on the run, and actually dropped the top cause my core warmed up on the bike, but my extremities, like my hands and my feet were cold--like pain cold--and it took a while to get normal again.  So, best of wishes to y'all racing, just be safe and put on what you need in relation to your efforts and your body!  Remember, DFL>DNF!

ah.. if you could still feel your hands and feet it isn't so bad. :p

I'd probably toss on some arm warmers since they can be put on quickly. Outside of that, I'd just go! If I had to run a 5k with my helmet on, then I would!

Serious question, not trying to be an @ss, but how do you put on arm warmers quickly, especially when wet? Mine are not the easiest thing to put on even when dry.

Put on the arm warmers - then roll down into a donut - pull off in small donut and place for T1 - when you come out slip only your hand through - do not unroll - do that on the bike -

woo hooo... I"m # 147... it seems a little high for the swim time I put down,, but oh well I'm not the fastest swimmer out there, and the later I start hopefully the warmer it will be...

I just hope this rain stops,, rain and cold really suck...

Instead of arm warmers I'm still thinking of throwing on a long sleeve tech shirt and maybe a windbreaker that I'll take off after the bike,,
