Subject: Martian Marathon
Is it too early to start an "official" Martian Marathon thread?  This is the first race I'm registered to run this year and this will be the first time I run it.  I'm signed up for the 1/2 marathon.  I'd like to know more about the race from folks who have run it in the past.

Never too late.  This is my first race of the year too and my first time running this one.  Everyone I've heard from has said this is a good one.  See ya out there!

Its very flat, in my opinion.  Lots of folks up to the half turn around, then the marathon group gets pretty thin.  I ran the full last year and I'm going to do the half this year.  There is some crazy scenery out there with the martian theme.

The course itself is a little boring.  Not much is going on with the flora and fauna, as its still so early here in MI.  We had great weather last year.  I think it was about 60 or so.

Aid stations are frequent, but I had a problem with the liquids.  It was some nasty berry flavored stuff that grossed me out.  They also had GU.

Ultima is the devil.  They served it on the trail half mary course on the Poto last year.  Disgusting.  They have single serving packets at Running Fit if you want to torture yourself by trying it out before the race...don't buy the whole canister.  I may be Fuel Belting it for the Martian Half.

I'm prolly gonna be 8 to an 8:30 pace.  My last half I finished with an 8:40 overall pace.  So maybe I'll start out with you.?

I'm around 60-75 seconds slower than that...

So do most folks just drive in super early on race day?  The 7am start will be tough.  I'm coming from S. of Lansing and it'll take me 90 minutes to get there.  Then I still have to figure out where to park...

Yup, that's the stuff.  IIRC, they also had it AA tri last year.  At that point, I would have drank glue, just to finish the day!

I wonder if Roctane has enough electrolytes in it, then I could just take water ...  Trixie, comments?

Spartn, I'm probably about at your time. I normally run 9's and on long runs end up about 9:30-9:45 near the end, so I'll hang with you.

I am planning to ride up early that morning, I think Trixie was also planning an early am trip.

I am up for carpooling with anyone.  I'm just north of Lansing off 127.

It's a deal!  I'm going to do sub 9 as long as I can.

I'd like to carpool, and I'm in Mason, so we could meet up somewhere around 96 very very early.  Are you picking up your packet that morning as well?

I'm doing the half at martian as the training I missed the last 4-6 weeks does not have me ready to race the full....  anywho...I will do the half at 8's.  and hopefully can pick it up from there

I will then be doing the trail marathon full, anyone wanna join me at the poto??

This is my first marathon!  Anyone know where packet pick-up and all that jazz is taking place?  On the website it was TBD but I assume that you can stop at one of the Running Fit locations and get everything squared away?

Last year packet pick up was at U of M Dearborn which is easy enough to find off of Evergreen north of Michigan Ave.  Not sure what to expect for this year if it's not on there site and I noticed there run course looks different from the start which was on the campus last year.

Also, out of curiosity (and I haven't checked the website yet so sorry if this is a stupid question) but will they allow headphones during this marathon?

They did last year.  Not sure if they changed it this year.  I doubt they would change it, its a closed course.

looks like I'll likely be running the 1/2+ (or the full-).  I have 18 miles on tap that weekend, so I'll probably go out 9 (or 10, if they do the loop in the beginning) and head back in.  Slow 10.5 to 11 minute miles if anyone wants to shuffle along with me.

Not registered for the Trail yet, but I think I'm in for the Trail Half Marathon...I'm taking all season to get ready before my first full.  Right now I plan on that being the Detroit Freep Marathon.

13 Days and counting!  Any Lansing area folks want to carpool to this?  With a 7am start I'm guessing we'll have to leave around 4 or 430am if we're picking up our packets on race day.  Frown  I'd be willing to help pay for gas or drive others in my 11 year old minivan.

I'm looking for guidance as well.  My run volume has not been what I want it to be throughout feb and Mar and have been nursing some nagging aches, etc. the last week.  I'm torn on whether to do the race (haven't actually signed up yet).  Any input?  I know that I can finish the 13 miles, I guess I am torn because I was really looking forward to being very well prepared for the race and seeking to improve on my half marathon time from the fall.  Any input on past experiences or advice would be appreciated!  Thanks.

I'm in the same boat as you kids. I need to mileage but hate to do the race and not "race" it. Not sure if I'll do the half or full yet...
