There was some talk last spring about an early open water swim around mid April or something.  Anyone interested this spring and have any suggestions for bodies of water that could perhaps be warmer than 35 degrees?

Dear gawd, man.  Have you lost your mind?  My first race is mid May (Albert Lea) and I'm just hoping that they will have the fish houses pulled in by then.

My cousin's hubby says that their lake gets warm early. They're somewhere up near Blaine. I can find out what he thinks the water will be around that time - and what lake it is they're on. Of course, that will all depend on the snow finally melting and the air temp going up as well.

The worry up her last year was that the ice wouldn't be off the lakes by fishing opener in mid may. If I remember correctly, the ice left the lakes about a week before opener.

The way things look, I may need to chop a channel in the ice to get an OWS this April.

Toughen up you wusses.  Kelly and I are planning on open water swims the whole week of March 21st-28th. (Of course they will be done down in Bonaire)

You know when my first OWS is scheduled for? June 14. At about, oh...8:00 AM. Maybe 7:55 if I feel all crazy like. And, frankly, even THAT is a bit early for me.

Ok, mid April was a bit early.  I wasn't thinking straight.  I bumped last year's early swim thread.  So how about mid May some time then?

1.  I'm with Bryan and Kelly

2.  Albert Lea in May is in a LAKE!  Holy crap!  That's early.

We went swimming in Calhoun over Memorial Day weekend two years ago, and while it was chilly it was fine.  I'd be up for that weekend again, if folks were around.  Or, whatever other craziness y'all come up with.  Blaine's good too.  I don't have sleeves on my wetsuit, though, so be kind!

Anyone want to go for a swim in Sunday?  I don't have a destination in mind, but I'd be willing to go pretty much anywhere in the metro.

I would possibly go in the afternoon on Sunday. I have the Gear West du in the morning, the cold swim might feel nice.  I will at least dip in and then watch you.  Not that I could save you if you ran into trouble, but I could at least call someone   Anywhere metro is fine with me.  Somewhere secluded so we're not laughed at - not Calhoun, for instance.

Isn't there a web site that shows lake temps in the area?  I just cannot find it...

I wasn't exactly planning oon doing a serious swim workout, more just getting out there to get out there.  If it's not too cold, then maybe swim for 15 to 20 minutes or so.

I used to have a website bookmarked that listed water quality in different lakes and I think it also listed temperatures, but I can't find it now.

We could always do Shady Oak Lake, as the beach is closed right not. You can just do a big loop/laps around the diving platform.......

I can't remember how early I did it last year, but it was COOOLD

We're essentially right across the river from Nokomis.  I'm thinking my earlier comment about 15-20 minutes was a tad optomistic.  Though I hear priming the wetsuit with warm water helps.

I am pretty open this weekend except for Saturday afternoon.  Emily said Sunday afternoon.  I don't really care when we go, but I will need somebody else there for the moral support.

I live less than 1 mile from nokomis but yikes the water is still really cold! (And its not warming up quickly if our high temps during the day only get into the 60s!)

I went to Nokomis this afternoon.  I figured with two days in the 90s that the watter wouldn't be too terribly cold.  The water was cool, but certainly not bad.  The wind was something else though.  White caps all over the place.  I can't say I'm used to getting smacked in the face with water.

Wet suit or no? I don't have a wet suit and I'd love to start swimming in a sans-pool location. Plus, my pool is closed this week.

Good for you!  Sorry I lost track of this thread.  I'd be up for swimming this coming weekend at Nokomis.  Maybe Memorial day?  Saturday would also work.

Goalie - you out there?  I'd meet at Shady Oak too. Can you just go right through the gate until they officially open? You don't get sent to Minnetonka jail?

I was happy to have my wetsuit.  There were probably a dozen people out in the water playing around as it was still pretty hot outside, but there really weren't people swimming around; lots of torsos out of the water, that is.  So a person could do some open water swimming sans wetsuit, but it is still a bit cool.

I was thinking about going to Nokomis this Sunday. One of the triathlons (you don't have to be registered for it) is going to start training there this weekend. Here is their schedule. It doesn't look as though they are officially planning a swim, but if enough people show up, there will probably be a few adventurous types:

When: Every Sunday through July 5th
Where: Lake Nokomis – Main beach

Details:

Bike – starting 7:30 a.m. (Starting May 24th, both short & International courses)

Run – after bike
