Overall Rank = 101/335

Age Group Rank = 10/26
Pre-race routine:

Flew into Vancouver on Friday, picked up my rental bike. No clips!!Checked out the course on Saturday morning, and went for a quick swim in the pool to get used to it, and rode the bike a bit to ensure height, feel was good.
Got up, had some breaky( muffin, blueberries, CLIF bar) about 7:30. And the time changed, so an hour less sleep!
Drove over to UBC, got a parking spot and then started to get nervous. Lots of people around, but I didn't feel out of place. All shapes and sized around.
Racked the bike, checked in got my timing chip, changed and went out to the body marking area. Found out we were in the outside pool! But was fine, water was warm. The chatted with others and waited to go.
Event warmup:

Stretched a bit, loosed up but my HR was around 300, so didn't do much.
Swim
  • 18m 27s
  • 700 meters
  • 02m 38s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was good. Started us out every 10seconds. I passed about 5 people from the our group, and didnt get passed so I was happy I seeded about right. Lanes were a little narrow so passing was a little difficult sometimes.
What would you do differently?:

RELAX...Not that I've done one, I do not need to stress so much. I was rev'ed for sure before the swim and it showed in my first two lengths of the pool. There were by far the worst two. Settled down after and enjoyed the swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Notsure of exact times here But would guess around 3-4 minutes. Get dressed and run the 500m to the racks.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to put socks on when wet...try baby powder in them next time.
Bike
  • 45m 20s
  • 20 kms
  • 26.47 km/hr
Comments:

Rocked on the bike. Wish I had my own bike here. I know clipped in on my bike, i would have moved better, but no big deal. I really enjoyed the bike. Saw alot of different bikes. From the high end Felts to the 3-speed old school mountain bikes.
What would you do differently?:

Next destination tri I think I would pack my own bike along. When I'm more experienced at putting it back together, etc.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again no time recorded but this was okay too. Jello legged it to the racks, grabbed my hat and off I went. Realized i left my garmin on the bike so went back for it costing about a minute. No biggee, as this was my first tri, and I just wanted to finish and ensure I was running at a good pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget the watch.
Run
  • 24m 1s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 48s  min/km
Comments:

I know this is my weakest event. With one under my belt, I know for next time I can push it a bit more. That being said, 27 min. was the fastest I did it in training, so 24:01 is crazy for me. I've heard rumours that the course was a bit shy of 5k, but whatever.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder. I know the distance now, so I can push myself harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Get threw the finish line, suck back some water from my NEW UBC waterbottle, and eat the bananas provided. Kissed my wife and thanked her for all the support she has given me along the way.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was really important for me to finish this one, as it was my first. I was extremely nervous waiting for the swim and it showed. With this one done now, I look forward to the next one in May, when I know I can go harder.

Event comments:

Really enjoyed it. All the volunteers were great and supportive. Was well organized from what I experienced. I am hooked now!!!
Glad my wife was there, and I think I've got her pumped up to give a Try-a Tri a shot in the future
