Comments: I set out to see if I could break 21:00. Plan was to see if I could hit 6:40 for the first mile, then try to keep it going. Unfortunately, there were no mile markers, so I just kept trying to push hard. I don't know, but I'm guessing I did the first mile closer to 6:15, as I bolted from the start with a bunch of the college track kids. Was within sight of the first 15 or so people for the first mile, then started slipping back some. Somewhere around 2 1/2 miles, got passed by a group of 3 women from the track team. After that, pretty much held my ground, and even passed one guy right at the end. What would you do differently?: Maybe a little slower out of the gate, to keep a little more for the push at the end. Since I had no idea where I was, it was hard to pace. If I had known that I was coming closer to breaking 20 minutes, I would have tried to give it a little more gas toward the end (even though I don't know how much more I could give at that point). Post race
Warm down: Hugs from my cheering section, water, bagel, banana - no pizza at this race :(. Hung around for a while waiting for results to be announced. Got a nice plaque for winning my age group. What limited your ability to perform faster: My lack of Kenyan ancestry. Event comments: Not a bad race - things were a little slow to get going, and slow to wrap up afterwards. Still, a fun afternoon. Last updated: 2005-04-03 12:00 AM

Watching the weather channel! Poured rain all weekend, but let up just in time for the race.
Ate my usual oatmeal, bananas, little bit of hammer gel (more for superstition than for any real effect).
Short jog, stretching, waiting around for them to start. My wife and two daughters were with me, and fortunately the starting and finishing lines were just outside of a gym, so they could stay relatively warm and dry.
