Overall Rank = 54/261

Age Group Rank = 11/28
Pre-race routine:

Drove down.
Event warmup:

Ran a mile with some strides thrown in for good measure.
Swim
  • 07m 1s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Time trial start in the pool. Thought I might have seeded myself too fast. And I was passed by 2 people. And I didn't hit my time. Hoping for about 6:30, but I didn't get it. Missed a few flip turns too.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep working at it.
Transition 1
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Could not get my shoes into the clips. And then I hear "Look out for the car buddy". great. Here comes a car on a closed bike course. Gaaahhhh! Still, i was faster than last year and the 17th fastest OA in T1.
What would you do differently?:

Calm down.
Bike
  • 46m 14s
  • 13.4 miles
  • 17.39 mile/hr
Comments:

The wind was the killer out there. 25mph winds out of the SSW. So that meant we had to go directly into the wind two times. First time I dropped down to 9.x mph. Dropped it into granny gear to get the RPM's back up. Second time around I never went below 11 and think it was closer to 12. On the back portion, on the way back, we were leaning, big time, into the cross wind.

What would you do differently?:

Looking back on it, I don't know if I would have done anything differently. Since it was the great equalizer, I did finish it in a higher place than last year. Still, it made me blow up on the run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 43s
Comments:

Missed my rack. Fortunately, Beth yelled at me to get to the right rack. Doh! Could have done that one a bit faster. And it shows. Dropped down to 53rd overall in T2.
What would you do differently?:

Remember where I racked the bike. Dumbazz!
Run
  • 27m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

One word for this. Ouch.
I blew up my legs on the bike on this. Had a slight side cramp at about mile 10 on the ride that carried over into the run. Heard someone behind me and low and behold it was John.
"John, is that you?"
"Yep, I'm just gonna draft off you for a bit"
"Alright, but I'm warning you, I might blow chunks here in a minute"
"Great..."
John stayed with me till we exited the woods and onto the last mile stretch. I was really hopping to just hold on for dear life and it wasn't happening. The side cramp was getting unbearable. I did what I never thought I would do again. I walked. With my hands above my heads, surrender style. Started to feel a little better and started up again. All in all, I think I walked for about 1:30 with this one and another short one a little further on.
I was dead. I had nothing. I left it on the bike and I paid for it big time.
What would you do differently?:

Get more speed work in. Have a good base, and probably do a better job guaging what my body is going through before I get off the bike.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Kicked off the shoes and marvelled and the glorious blisters I received for my effort. First run without socks for the year. Knew this was going to happen so no surprise. Ate some of the food, dranks tons of stuff and just sat down for a bit, with Beth, in the shade to cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of speed work. Knew it coming in.

Event comments:

Even with the wind, I love this race. Monte does a great job of putting on a class event that is superb for beginners. As always, I'll be back next year.

Nice race Crowny.  If your wind was like ours here I can understand the tough bike leg.  Better watch it, though...blow your legs up again at QC Tri and I'm going to run right by you.
