so i was looking at the miamiman 1/2 iron bike course and it showed 13 feet of climb. is that bike course really that flat? anyone familiar with it give me some info please. i cant access the results from the previous 3 years so i cant see bike splits to answer my question. thanks in advance, and any info is appreciated.

I did the international a few years ago and it was flat as can be.  That's what it's like down here in south Florida - the only hills we see are the drawbridges!  A ton of people on here have done the 1/2 Iron, I'm sure they can tell you more about the course.

Yes, the bike is that flat but wind can be an issue. Also the bike is a couple miles short. I did the race in 2007 and would be happy to try and answer any of your questions.

Yep....It's really flat and very nice bike course...but...there is a big factor that can affect your performance...it's usually super-windy all year round....usually the winds come from NE at 20 mph or more by the time of the Race...that means you will have the headwinds/crosswinds in your last 18 miles way back to Transition....You will need to save your energy for that last miles ...

Now during the Summer time...the winds are coming from SE most of the time...but...sometime from SW...

The Miami Man Bike Course is my back yard...I live in the are "The Redlands" and is where I train every single day....Also I'm in charge to mark and put the signs for the Race...I know very well this Bike Course....

Also I usually help guding in the Orientation Bike Ride that MultiRace organize during the last 2 weekends before the Race...

I have raced this one since 2005....It will be my 5th time racing this year

I hope my information can help you and whatever you need ask me....

Good Luck!!!

Yep, I've done 50+ mile rides around here with less than 20ft of vert.  The wind can be a factor but the basically circular shape of the meat of the course evens things out.

Velo - why don't they do anything about the distance?  The shortage is pretty significant.  I'm happy with my pr but it's always in the back of my mind.

Thanks,

Sounds about right, also my CPU had it at 52.98 miles rack to rack, ~13 miles out to the two loop point then return. Only issue I had during the MM ride was on the road that returned into the park.  Lots of traffic by then and you really had to pay attention to the a-holes without any patience.  Cops were pretty good though, one on foot pulled over somebody because they were ignoring police commands.

We all know that there are mountains in S. FL, they're along I95 called landfills!

As other folks have said, yep... it is really that flat! Welcome to South FL! However, wind is definitely an issue on this course every year.

The absolute BEST part of the MiamiMan course is the swim in the lake. It is CRYSTAL clear! Seriously! I found myself distracted by the bottom... just gorgeous! Can't wait to do it again this year.

thanks for all the replies everyone, i cant believe how flat that course is. i deal with a bit of wind on almost all my rides on the out and back trail that we ride, so it shouldnt bother me come raceday. i've got a few weeks til i start my training plan to lead into the race, so if any of you are doing the race this year, good luck and i'll see you there.

I have a question about the swim. It is in a lake and I am wondering how that would compare to swimming in the ocean. Would it be right to assume that you would be using your legs a little more to keep afloat as opposed to swimming in the ocean where you are more buoyant? Thanks.

not really considering it is wetsuit legal.  I have worn a wet suit the past 2 years, and bouyency is not a problem, but if you choose not to wear a wetsuit then you wuold be using your legs a bit more.

anywhere you ride its windy in florida, wind and rain we have plenty off.....especially in the summer.

needless to say i will buy a wetsuit...if a suit saves me 2-3 min in a race i am ok with that.
