I'm just wondering whether anyone finds the treadmill more difficult than running outdoors?

When I run my usual outdoor speed on a treadmill, I definitely find it harder. Not only do I get out of breath quicker, but  I also get more aches and pains. I know I am running the same speed in both cases as I have my foot pod telling me what speed am I doing.

I run on the treadmill a lot.  What I have found with my treadmill is that with the same effort I am a lot faster outside.  I also have a foot pod connected to my garmin 305.  So I know it is not a calibration issue with the treadmill.  I am usually about 20-30 seconds faster a mile in the real world.  I really don't know why.  That is a pretty big difference.

I also feel the treadmill is less healthy.  I also get more aches and pains.  But I really get bored outside running and like to watch the baseball game while running.  I know should stop.

It is for me.

Outside for me to have a 9 MM, it means that sometimes I go faster than a 9 MM and other times slower... which all evens out to a 9 MM.

Whereas on the treadmill, it's a constant pace, so I don't get to "rest" (aka: go a bit slower when my body feels like it) some during the run... which makes it harder.

I'm always faster outside.

The treadmill is disasterously hard for me.  I don't know why, but I know I think I'm dying and I hate it.  So, I don't do it.  Tris aren't on a treadmill, so I don't really care.

I'd rather run outside in pouring ran, -20 below, 1 foot of snow, 100 degrees, doesn't matter over doing even 10 minutes on the treadmill b/c of how hard it feels to me.

Weird, I have the opposite experience on a treadmill. I can clank along on a treadmill doing 8:30 miles pretty easy but on the road I suffer putting out a 9:15. I really only use the treadmill if the weather is bad or if I tack a mile or three at the end of strength training.

On the treadmill, if I run over an hour I get terrible lower back pains, but I can run on the road for over 4 hours without back pain. Don't know why.

I do like to do intervals on the treadmill, tho.

I think it all boils down to your treadmill. We got brand new higher tech models at our gym several years ago and all the runners who use them noticed a huge difference; and this was just changing to an upgraded version of the same piece of equipment. The nicer models are smoother, more ergonomic to the body. Using this tread, I feel like I'm flying way faster than outdoors and I'm getting less impact on my body than outdoor runs.

Regardless of speed, I can not stand the treadmill because its inside.  I do not have the patience to run in one spot for any significant amount of time.  Im in the -20, 3 feet of snow, 100 degrees, etc., etc. group.  Bring on the elements, I'm still going to run outside.

It seems to me like there is more effort needed to keep a constant pace then there is to throttle up and down in general. Kinda weird. The only reasons I'd use a treadmill for would be icy/extreme weather outside or I'm already at the gym and want a quick dose of cardio. Like others have said, my pace is faster outside with seemingly less effort.

I totally hate the treadmill, too.  I'm way slower on it, and it makes my knee hurt really bad.  So I just don't run on it at all.  If it's raining, I still run outside.  The tri is going to be in the rain if rain falls, and it's never going to be on the treadmill... If there's lightning and hail, I lift weights or run on the indoor track @ the gym, but I never ever run on the treadmill.

x2 T-mill is easier for me than outside.  It's also easier on my body.

Typically, the faster you run the more you'll notice that the treadmill is harder.  The only way I can see the treadmill being easier is if you normally run in hilly and/or hot areas.

I've also heard that in order to get the most "realistic" run on a treadmill, the incline should be set at 0.5.  Though I have no idea if theres any truth to it.  Maybe you could try it and see if you feel any better?

I do a fair amount of treadmill running.  I wouldn't necessarily say that it's easier as a whole, but the impact is definitely more gentle on my body/joints.  I have a messed up lower back, so running outside hurts way more.  I enjoy running outside more, but the extra pain isn't worth it for me...so I have to limit my outdoor runs to no more than 2x per week.

Size matters!

Depending on the size of the running area on your treadmill (width and length of the track) you may not have enough room for your 'outside' stride.  Not only that, but the presence of hand rails and being indoors may have claustorphobic type affect on your stride.  You essentially take more steps at the same pace over the same distance.

I'm only 5'5" and this happens to me on the treadmill.  I can't imagine being able to maintain a full stride on a treadmill if I was a few inches or more taller.

Just my observation.

What I find is that after I go thru a stretch of running a lot on the treadmill, I find it harder to run outside. When I run a lot outside and then go back to the treadmill, the treadmill is harder. It seems to even out for me.

As a 'crazy person' who did my 22 mile long run on a treadmill with no music, I don't ever run more than 4 minutes at the same pace and incline.  I also took water/walk breaks every 1.25 miles.

Point is, you don't have to do an entire treadmill at one pace.

I'm faster on the treadmill than outside. I used to hate the treadmill but this winter we had a lot more snow and ice so I did more treadmill running than in the part. One thing I like is it teaches me how to pace better and keep consistent pace.

I've heard the .5% or 1% incline on treadmill is needed to equal same speed/effort as outside.

I find the treadmill hard because it forces me to keep a pace.  I always hated running someone else's pace....

treadmills are the devil.  it's nice to run and catch the news/game at the same time, but mother nature has a much more to offer, imo.  i get way too bored and start getting ancy (sp?).

like GOPENNSTATE said, never heard of run leg of a tri being on a devil so why bother.  seems like there's more to benefit by running outdoors, regardless of the weather/climate.

plus, i'm a swerver so trying to keep my stride on a 2ft wide path is annoying...especially when i can't stop looking left & right the entire time trying to read the captions on the 50 tv's.

I really tense up on the treadmill.  My gait is a little screwy because of a knee injury and I seem to overcompensate for that.  I end up with pain in my shins and calves in only a few minutes of TM running.

I have always hated the treadmill, but sometimes it is a necessary evil when I am away from home. Whenever I run on the treadmill I adjust the speed to what feels comfortable and just run for time instead of paying any attention to the speed or distance. I typically run between a 7:15 to 7:30 pace on the road, but when I get on a treadmill I find myself running between a "8:30 to 9:00" pace.

Many times individuals tend to over-stride on the tread mill.  This can cause all sorts of problems...

One of the problems that I have with treadmills is overheating. No air flowing past you = the more your body has to work cooling itself down. Otherwise, I personally think it is easier than running outside.
