Sylvan Lake, Alberta

Total Time = 1h 38m 49s
Overall Rank = 26/143
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 6/22
Pre-race routine:

Woke up 4:30am!! met up with my buddy, and made the 1 1/2 hr drive up to Sylvan Lake. Had a long registration line, with no pre-race package pickup, so things started off about 40 minutes late.
Event warmup:

Not alot of warmup....swim was in a 25m pool, and they started off 3/lane. Started with the 20+minute crowd, so we waited for almost 2 hours to go. Met up with my 1st ever BT'er...as part of our mentor group before that was neat.
Swim
  • 14m 47s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 58s / 100 meters
Comments:

Swim was good. 3 of us were seeded pretty even, so made it nice. We jockeyed for position a bit, but after the 1st 500m, I was content to sit on the guys feet in front of me and take it easy for the last 250m.
What would you do differently?:

Swim time included the few hundred metre run to the transition from the pool. I know I could have swam more agressively, but was content to draft for the last 1/2 of the swim.Lady in my lane really wanted to pass the two of us the last few lengths and she ended up doing it on the 29th of the 30 lengths so it cause a bit of a cluster coming home.
Transition 1
  • 02m 30s
Comments:

Was a good transition until I got to the dismount line, and realized I had my race number on the front. No biggee, but i turned it to the back, and pulled off one of the nubbies things, so I wasted time refeeding it through the number.
What would you do differently?:

Not rip my number off my race belt. :) Thinking I'm going to invest in one them there Tri-Jersey's too.
Bike
  • 52m 37s
  • 26 kms
  • 29.65 km/hr
Comments:

WINDY,WINDY,WINDY!! The wind was either in our faces, or blowing across us(which would be a cross-wind dummy). This was a tough ride. Wasn't too hilly or anything, just the wind made it hard to just pedal. We did get the wind at our back on the last turn when we came into town, which was about the last 3kms. Passed about a dozen people that out there before me, and was pleased that I never got passed on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not alot. Was pleased with the irde in that amount of wind.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Was a good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Could probably be quicker if I didnt have to ensure the orthoticswere in the proper place in the shoe. But the flip side is if I didn't have them in I couldn't run, and since I dig this whole "triathlon thing', I guess the extra 20 seconds is warranted.
Run
  • 31m 26s
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 17s  min/km
Comments:

CRAPPERS!!. Run went long. Most people had it at almost 5.5 kms. So with that distance, I was happy with the run. My calves during burn up like a few ago.
What would you do differently?:

Run FASTER.
Post race
Warm down:

eat,stretch, be merry

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my legs. I finished 26th overall, but 82nd on the run...UMM..I think I need to work on my running ability maybe?
Overall, was happy with race. Felt like I was smarter than the last one. Pushed the bike, but recognized that there was run coming, so felt prepared a little more.

Event comments:

We hung around for a bit and watched others finish up. Watched the kids go, which was a hoot. I won a massive bottle of HAMMER GEL and a light for my bike.WOOHOO!!

Nice job Trevor.  The whole pool thing was interesting - 3 people swim in one lane until done?  I guess that is the only way to do a long swim in a pool.  26th overall is great!  I bet you place in your AG by end of the season!

Great job Trevor!

If I only had one wish, it would be you talk in yards and miles, instead of meters!  I saw 29mph for your bike and thought "holy crap, I want to train the way he does!".

LOL x2 that was what I was going to say, good job, but I have no idea how fast you went.

I feel your pain on the run.  Faster just takes time.
