Sunny
Total Time = 2h 16m 22s
Overall Rank = 18/290
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 5/47
Pre-race routine:

Woke up a little later, because I was told that transition was done by number, so I figured I had a spot all reserved. .. .Wrong! Oh well, I got a decent spot anyway.
Event warmup:

Did a 1 mile jog and a little swimming, but not enough swimming.
Swim
  • 23m 4s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Decent swim. .not my best, I think I am capable of doing better. I seemed to get off course a bit a couple of times. I liked the mass start though. I think all races should be like that. Let us line up and duke it out.
What would you do differently?:

Try to sight a little better and jump on the feet of the guy in front of me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

T1 was about normal, I did have some problems getting my wetsuit off. I had a decent transition time, not the fastest, but not the slowest either.
Bike
  • 1h 03m 40s
  • 24.8 miles
  • 23.37 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't know what my deal was, but I just didn't feel fast and didn't really have my head in the game. My legs didn't really warm up till mile 13 and even then I didn't feel 100% on the bike. I am not sure what it was. The hills seemed hard, felt like I was pushing and not going anywhere. After mile 13 I started to feel better, but then I had a masses of people to weave through and was starting to think about the run and dread that. . . just not a good mental performance on my part.
What would you do differently?:

Perhaps go with a 11-26 gear ratio instead of 11-23, that might have helped a little on the hills. I needed to suck it up and go harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

Decent T2. I wanted to be under a minute and I was.
Run
  • 47m 15s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 37s  min/mile
Comments:

Horrible run. I didn't have good run at all. I hit the run and actually felt ok, but my legs just wouldn't turn over, my heart rate was high, but didn't feel like I was going anywhere. Couple of mile splits were around 7:20 for the first two miles which is good for me. I guess I just expected a little more from myself. Overall my run has come a long way and 7:30 miles is good for me. But when everyone else is running low 6 minute miles and high 5 minute miles, low 7s just won't cut it.
Post race
Warm down:

Did a 3.1 loop wit Bob. . . I was done after that.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Tired legs and lack of mental focus.

Event comments:

Awesome race. Make sure you have this one on your races for 2010!!!!!

One thing is that I was in the 30-34 age group, when in reality I turn 35 this year, so should have been in the 35-39 age group. Not sure why I was in the younger age group.

AWESOME RACE!!! Wow!!

Yeah my friend Eric was also in the AG below him by mistake. They told him there was some confusion on those who 'aged up' this year but that they would go back and correct them today I think. So check back on the race results... you should eventually end up where you're supposed to be.

I heard from a handful of people they were "told" there would be assigned racking (both race morning and here on BT)... where did ya'll hear this? I never heard it and didn't expect it at all... just curious.

I got a text message from someone on the board of directors (organizers) that we were to have assigned transition slots by number.  It didn't happen, which is fine, but I just thought that we would going into the morning.  I like assigned slots. .makes for less hassle.

Another solid race, great job!  That run course was deceptively tough, the park road has just enough hills to break up your pace, glad I didn't have to go out for another loop.

Question on the bike gearing...are you running a 39/53 crank?  That 11 tooth cog must give you crazy top end speed.  I went with a 12-23 cassette instead of 12-25 (on 39/53 crank) because I like the 'extra' 18 tooth cog, keeps it close range through rolling terrain.  Probably would have gone 12-25 for the Olympic distance though.

Great race, despite the criticism from the guy writing the race report. Looks like you'll be strong for Kansas 70.3.
