Anyone that is participating in Augusta planning on running the full marathon on Turkey Day?

If you are, how are you approaching training?

Are you doing your normal HIM training, then just upping volume on the run during the next 6 weeks leading up to the marathon?

Assuming you take max 2 weeks to recover from the HIM, that would give you up to 7 weeks before the mary. add in taper week, and that puts you at 6 full weeks to train, post HIM.

Assuming you up your run volume for the HIM, then follow the final 6 weeks or so of a Hal Higdon plan (or other reknown plan), you could possibly have a pretty good run, no?

I'd like to hear what you wily ol' veterans have to say about this.

Thanks!

I did the ATL marathon last year, 3.5 weeks after the Beach to Battleship IM. I guess that's a different scenario, though.

If you run up to 14-15 miles in prep for Augusta, even with a couple of weeks off, it should be a pretty doable ramp-up to get to 20 three-ish weeks out from the marathon:

10/3: 8
10/10: 8
10/10: 14
10/17: 16
10/24: 18
10/31: 10
11/7: 20
11/14: 10
11/21: 8
11/26: 26.2

Jim's schedule looks perfect.  I would add:

-You need to have your weekly run volume above 25 miles per week during your HIM training.

-Make sure you are fully recovered from the HIM before ramping up the long runs

-Listen to your body.  Marathon training is tough on the body and you have to watch out for injuries.

I plan on doing both.  Since I'm new the the long distance it is more of a "building a base" year.  As long as each race time is improving I'm happy then can start trying to get better as it relates to previously run races.

marathons arent to be toyed with. they will beat your body up so be careful what you ask for. the full mary gives you the gift that keeps on giving. im still suffering from Boston from 6 weeks ago.

I am not doing that this year but last year I did the SCHIM and the Atlanta full and that was the same time frame you are talking about.

I trained for both. However, I did not do well at that HIM but I did PR the marathon and then went on to PR another marathon 7 weeks later. Here is what I did:

Run mileage for June /July was 40+mpw. Longest run I did in July was 17 miles -- that was end of July. (Basically I added 4 miles onto my longest run each week until I was 20+ for the long run. So 9, 13,17, 21. All other runs I kept the same)

In August I bumped run mileage to range 40-50+ mpw and did a long run of 21-23 miles for 3 weeks and then did an off week of 16 miles.  I tapered the run mileage 3 weeks out from the HIM --last 20+ miles 3 weeks out, 16 miler 2 weeks out, 10 miler 1 week out, 13.1 of the HIM.

After the HIM I did a long run of 21 miles 5 days after and my mileage was 50+.

I will say I bumped my mileage up way too quickly in Oct--topping out at 73mpw by the 3rd week. As a result I ended up  DNF the Silver Comet Half marathon and had to take 5 straight days off from running. So just be careful.

I would recommend keeping your run mileage around 50mpw unless you are use to higher mileage.

Bottom line: I would focus on you HIM training June/July and then in August start incorporating some marathon focused training (more running, cut other stuff slightly).

I did Steelhead 70.3 followed by the Chicago Marathon last year. My mistake was trying to get into long runs too soon after the 70.3. I had dead legs for most of the marathon training. I still did pretty good in the marathon. But, if I had to do it over again, I would take it easy for 2-3 weeks after the HIM.
