Lake Mills Triathlon
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 49m 55s
Overall Rank = 536/594
Age Group = Novice
Age Group Rank = 47/55
Pre-race routine:

Showed up at about 5:45 completely clueless. I parked up by the bowling alley. Or I think it was a bowling alley. Then I went down and got a spot on the first rack for the novices instead of looking for close to the end. Oh well. I went and surveyed the area and tried to stay relatively calm.
Event warmup:

I jogged over to the lake to use the restroom over there and back. Then I swam maybe 1/3rd of the way to the first bui (spelling?) and back to get the feel for the suit.
Swim
  • 12m 1s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I started in the middle front. The mob freaked me out some but not terribly bad. I had to stop once to let someone by so I could get to the right side of the group. There were less people there. Then around the bui and I swam ok. Someone cut me off heading out to the center of the lake doing the back stroke and I swallowed some water and it took me a second to get situated. I saw a few kayaks head out for people but nothing terrible.

I had to stop twice to float to catch my breath.
What would you do differently?:

Start on the right side or outside of the group to avoid the mob some.
Transition 1
  • 04m 36s
Comments:

This took me forever compared to some. I didn't have a tri top on under the wetsuit and so had to put one on. All in all I don't think 4:36 is too bad for a newb.
What would you do differently?:

Have a Donkai jersey, or a jersey on, under the wet suit.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 17s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 15.73 mile/hr
Comments:

It turns out I had a brake pad rubbing. It was very minimal and I don't want that to be an excuse. I wanted to be over 15 miles per hour and after finding out that the bike course was 15.8 miles I was indeed over it. I feel pretty decent about the ride. I was a touch tired by the end.
What would you do differently?:

No rubbing brake pad.
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

This was terrible. I actually started running back to the bike area before I realized I was going the wrong way. It only took 10 feet for me to realize it but I was still irritable.
Run
  • 30m 21s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

This was ok. I feel so slow doing this after the bike. About a half of a mile in my right calf started tightening/cramping up but I kept at it and it was gone by the turn. I felt like my legs gave up a bit the last mile and think I could have done that better.

There was a woman who was passing me and then I'd pass her back during the run. I made a joke about it being her turn to pass me and she wasn't all about it. That was the only negative really.

I wanted to beat 10 min a mile and did so.

I need to learn to drink while I run. :)
Post race
Warm down:

Stumbled to get some food. Oddly I had a hard time eating the oranges.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Train train train. I need to train more. :) I certainly didn't train enough after falling off the wagon in the winter.

Event comments:

All in all I beat all my goals except 1:45 due to transitions. I felt "slow" however. Again I'm probably too reserved in these things. My disappointment with the race only lies in the fact that I misjudged how well the other novices would do and felt my division and overall placement were really low.

However, it was awesome. Seeing everyone on a race day was great. Being able to say hi as I was passed, for now ;), was cool as well. I'm pretty happy with the day as a whole.

Now who wants to buy me a Kestral and Endurance house for $4k? :-P

Great work!  Especially on the swim - I know that was something you were concerned about at the Wingra swim on Thurs.  But you went and conquered!  Congrats!

Nice race! Don't worry, with some tricks you can get those transitions sped up by quite a bit. I don't know if running the right direction is considered a trick though

p.s., I've run the wrong way before as well.

Very nice first race! Way to get the first one under your belt. Youll learn a lot about transitions by just experience. Very good considering the conditions and it being your first one.
