Oliver Half Iron - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

View Member's Race Log View other race reports
Oliver, British Columbia
Total Time = 5h 04m 29s
Overall Rank = 91/907
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 17/64
Pre-race routine:

Same as the year before, the family and I drove to Oliver on Thursday to relax, do some wine tours and get used to the desert heat. Stayed in the campsite that we had last year and it was great.
Event warmup:

The morning of the race had my Vector, coffee and 3 trips to the bathrooms. I set up my transition and did some stretching of the legs and shoulders while downing my second cup of coffee and while waiting for the clock to tick a bit closer to 0730.
  • 35m 15s
  • 2000 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters

I started right up front with Ronan after so many races I have found myself seeded too far in the back. The gun went off with no countdown this year and caught me off guard. I ran forward with the rest of the fray and began my sprint for the first 200 to 300 meters. Ouch, I have no idea what happened but I was hammered from the start to the finish. Elbows, feet and even a few fists I think. After the first 800 meters I decided to stop trying to get around the bodies and just draft to conserve energy. The drafting was great but I think it did me more harm than good.
What would you do differently?:

No more drafting, I'll concentrate on my swimming abilities to get me through and just draft when the opportunity presents itself.
Transition 1
  • 03m 34s

Good transition overall, I did have a hard time getting out of the water due to a major cramp in my left quad. I managed to Catch Ronan as he was running the distance to the bikes and managed to see Kari and Paul just as I ran into T1. The transition was good, my new top was a bit of a pain as the zipper didn't want to cooperate. Next year, my goal will be to drop 35 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Just streamline things, Calgary will be a good test of the lessons I've learned.
  • 2h 33m 35s
  • 93 kms
  • 36.33 km/hr

Short and sweet; I love the bike. I am fast confident and strong on the bike. My cardio is way up. I was passing the field smoothly and constantly from the second I got on the saddle. My average speed at the halfway mark was 36.9 Km/H but then shortly after the inner quads began to seize followed by the hams. I have got to try to figure this problem out.
What would you do differently?:

Looking at getting re-fitted on the bike, possible nutrition issues or...I don't know.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s

Great T2, not much to say.
What would you do differently?:

Not much to change on this, long run out of the racks to get to the run start on sore legs.
  • 1h 50m 48s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 15s  min/km

One of the worst runs ever. Stopped a lot due to heart stopping leg cramps / seizures. Got to the bridge on the first lap and both legs went on me. These cramps if I can describe them are complete. No movement, no extension just total shutdown. I dragged myself across the bridge to the otherside, got ahold of myself, called myself a few choice names then carried on. That was about 5K in. The remaining run just got better.
What would you do differently?:

Working on it
Post race
Warm down:

This was the first race I've done where I did not make my goal. 4:26 was what I missed it by. I know my body and I know I could have pushed it further than I did. This report reflects my impression of my final effort in the race; lacking in drive. Jumped in the lake, went to the arena for lunch, massage, back to the site, packed up and got out of town with a heavy heart knowing that it will be an entire year before I can get a crack at this one again. +5 will not happen again.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Legs and the muscles in them.

Ouch....wasn't aware of your cramping issues. Sorry to hear. Nice bike ride though...51st overall! Gotta be happy with that.

Do you take any form of salt before or during the race? Might be part of your caramping problems.

Nice race...bummer about the cramps on the bike and run. I hope you can figure out how to prevent them going forward and you will be even faster!

Great race !!!! Sorry about the cramping on the bike/run. You sound pretty determined to sort it out so I'm sure you'll do just that.

Wow, great time consider the massive cramping on the run!  Wicked bike split as well.
