I'm still on the fence about this one. It's a week before Vineman, and while it would be a good tune-up race, I could just see myself getting hurt right before my "A" race and blowing it!  I am a bit of a clutz, ya know...but on the other hand, I've never been hurt during a race, just during training. Maybe I need to find a race every weekend!

Any thoughts?

Well there is a JCC sprint tri  two weeks before Vineman.  You could do that as a tune up. Two weeks might be perfect if you treat it as a transition practice, fast brick kind of workout.

robot - 2009-06-10 6:30 PM Going for overall placement this time?

I don't think I'll have a shot. I did well last time mainly because Tempe Int'l was the next day and the big boys stayed home. I'll be right be hind them (and some of the ladies) this time I'm sure.  BUT it'll be a nice chance to escape the heat of Phoenix and go to the heat to Chino Valley.

Hi! I'm in for Chino Valley!

I'm new to BT and new to the sport.  This will be my third sprint, but I have to admit that all 3 were poorly done.  In one I had a flat tire on my mountain bike, in another I had a "wrong way" swim (its a long story), and the last one I didn't really train.

This is my first race since I decided to train for the California 70.3 in March 2010.   I'm training properly, I have a road bike, and I'm taking swim lessons.  We'll see how it goes!  Wish me luck!

Welcome to BT! Oceanside is a blast! I didn't do it this year, but my husband did -- he had a great time and so did I.  I'm thinking about doing it next year (if it's not closed already) as the tune-up race to IM St. George...

I am a big fan of doing races as training, taper, or recovery plan.  However, you have to be able to have the "A" race or "D" race mentality.  If you can not focus your mind and must put a Grrr into everything you do - skip it.

But, if you can go easy and pull a "Coke-Zero" attitude and "enjoy the course a little longer" you just may find that it will be one of your most fun races!  I did the Olympic at Mountain Man in Flagstaff last year as a recovery after my first ever HIM - funny that it was my best Oly time, I did not go all out, and I had one of my favorite races (not to mention favorite house party times!)

Only you know if you can defferientiate your all out effort or not - if every race is at all out race pace you just might hurt yourself there or at your real "A" race if you do not watch out.

I struggle with that ability to take it slow and easy during training much less a race.

So I guess I'm with Tony the Tiger on team all Grrr all the time.

I've got Mt. Man Half one week after Chino. After reading Jerry's post I'm questioning my original plan of crushing all humans at the Chino race. Now I might just slink in the main pack and enjoy the course. Hmm, what to do, what to do...

Thanks Jerry! I know I can SAY that I'm going to treat a race like a "D" race, but it's hard to know what will happen when I get out there.  But I understand what you're saying -- my half marathon PR came at the tail end of an 18-mile run (we were in marathon training, and did 5 miles before the Fiesta Bowl half started), when I was running with a friend who insisted we walk every 20 minutes, and at the end I decided to kick it up a notch (had the energy to do so), and lo and behold, I shaved five minutes off my half marathon PR! But I went into the race not caring about time, just to enjoy the run.

Yikes! If you're going to crush all humans, I guess I can breathe a sigh of relief because I'll likely be behind you the entire time anyway!   Unless Mark starts the fast guys after the slow girls...then I'd better prepare to get steamrolled!

Mark will start us around the same time. Last time he started folks in reverse age order, youngest go last.

I have no hope regulating my races.  They all seem to be A races when the gun goes off.  I just have to be selective when signing up in the first place.  I know this is a problem but it's one of the many I have.

I am a little older than you, so you just be nice when you're trying to steamroll over this old lady, you young whippersnapper! Else one of these days you may find yourself walking back from Lake Pleasant!

Do any of you know if the course is hilly?  I saw the map of the course the race director provided on the web but I couldn't tell if it had hills or not.  I'm trying to mentally prepare!

I disagree with Jerry.

A race is a race. You should go as hard as you can for every race.

The difference between an A and a D race is your preparation before
and taper up to.

That being said, I really only have A & B.

An A race I've killed myself in training and have fully tapered for.
A B race is something that is in the training cycle for an A race for
and I train through.

I actually don't race that much because the pressure I put on myself
is a bit stressful. (Yes, even though I'm BOP. )

So my advice would be to race the race as a race.
