Overall Rank = 132/253
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 27/40
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30, ate some oatmeal, a banana and half a cliff bar.

Then we prepared to leave and it's amazing how one small decision can cause such a headache...

ME: Are we ready to leave (as I'm grabbing my keys)
My wife: yep, oh and don't worry about your keys I have mine
Me: ok.

Fast forward to arriving at race site....I'm staring dumbfounded at my bike rank wondering just how I planned on unlocking my bike from the rack without my keys.

Thnakfully I was at the race site way early so I was able to coax my brother into driving 50 minutes to get me my keys, he made it with 15 minutes to spare.

Event warmup:

Warmup? Heck, I didn't get my bike and gear set up until 10 minutes before my wave went off!
Swim
  • 38m 20s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went well, there were plenty of buoys and I swam next to the same guy the entire swim. Once we got out of the water we chatted a bit because we were both surprised that we swam the exact same pace the entire time.

The whole goal with this swim was coming out of the wonder fresh and feeling good. Mission accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Transition 1
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Could have moved it a bit but hey, it's a long day and I'm not competing for a podium spot!
Bike
  • 2h 43m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.60 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was challenging, lots of non stop rollers/hills. Overall a rather uneventful ride.
What would you do differently?:

do more training rides on hills.
Transition 2
  • 01m 53s
Run
  • 2h 14m 15s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

yikes this run kicked my arse. That first hill to start the run was not fun.

The first 4 miles were ok (about a 9 min mile) but then the wheels fell off. Legs were just toast. The run course seemed to be non stop rollers and after a challenging bike, it took everything I had just to keep moving.

What would you do differently?:

It's my first HIM and in hindsight I should have backed off the bike just a bit given my lack of hill training. But hey, live and learn right?
Post race
Warm down:

Met my wife and friend, grabbed some water and took a nice dip in the lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This was my first HIM and it was really done on a whim, my training plan is for a HIM in late July so this race came with only about half of the training plan done.

So with that in mind, this race accomplished exacatly what I wanted it to 1) test my fitness 2) test pacing 3) test nutrition

Event comments:

I enjoyed the race. I thought the volunteers did a nice job and the run aid stations were well stocked. I likely do this one again.

Ha, I am pretty sure I was parked right next to you and over heard your key story. Glad to hear it worked out ok.

Congratulations on finishing your first 1/2 IM.

Congrats on your first HIM and what a fantastic job, considering the training and pre-race stress!  I totally agree, that run course and it's little freakin hills are relentless!   They all added up to much worse than what the woodchip hill could offer.  The sun was brutal as well.  It is a beautiful bike course with just enough challenge and mostly nice roads.  I love riding out there.

Congrats on your first HIM.  Hopefully you'll be even better prepared for the next one!

I thought the run course was hard too.  There wasn't really a flat section.  You were either going uphill or downhill
