Absolutely!  I'm a huge chicken when it comes to being cold - especially swimming in it.   I'm not planning on being anywhere near the podium so the extra time in transition is of no concern to me.

Nice to see so many people participating!  Would be neat to put a face with the profile though not sure if that's really possible.  I'll be there early - the blond in the "mature" transition area with the hyper kid trying to stuff herself into her wetsuit aaaghhhh.

Well, if your in the 'mature' transition area, I guess I'm in the EXTRA mature section.   Laughing  Definitely will keep my eye open for you.    I'd say I'll be the woman with gray hair, but I think there will be a few of us. Wink   I'll be wearing braids.

Well clearly age has nothing to do with this.  If I'm lucky - I'll catch a glimpse of the back of your head - gray hair whipping in the wind - as you fly past me   Hope to see ya!

My recommendation is to stay as far left as possible and enjoy the ride.

I'm confused... As far left or right? As far left is not center of the road, usually used for passing?

Sorry... you are right! I'm the confused one. (I had just read a forum on the Chicago Tri where they actually have to ride to the left on Lake Shore Drive).

Stay to the RIGHT!!! (that doesn't mean ride on the gravel... just as far to the right as you feel comfortable).

I was out at Belwood yesterday riding the new bike route.    It is SUCH a fun course.   One has the potential to do some fast riding on that one - of course, the way the wind blows will be a bit of a factor, but it is well suited for using the aero bars, if you have them.

Didn't swim there, but walked in up to the hips and the water is COLD!   Way colder than Guelph Lake.    There will be some hardy folks who won't care, but I would suggest a wetsuit if you have one.

Thanks kimmax and bopper for suggestions. I will ride on right side then and hoping for a day with no wind

Does anyone know if the construction on side road 4 (where it becomes side road 5) is finished?  I biked the route a few weeks ago and there was a zone of dirt/gravel/scree.

I'll be the person bringing up the rear of the tri - but still having fun

Yes, the construction is finished.   We cycled the route last Thursday and they were just doing some finishing touches on the upaved sides.   A little dirty but nice and smooth.

Hi,

I would really like to run this triathlon (it would be my second one) but unfortunately have no way of getting there. I was wondering if anyone could give me a ride from Toronto (beaches-east). I would be more than happy to help pay for gas and costs.

Thanks,
Keane

Drove the road yesterday and it's pristine. That is going to be an AWESOME fast road to ride... no potholes... no cracks... just smooth fast asphalt. LOVE it!!!

For all the other's wondering... the route is rolling... no steep hills like Milton, just gently rolling hills (ok... there could be ONE steep hill, but depending on which way the route goes... it's either downhill early or uphill late  in the ride)... it's on Side Road 5... about 4-5 km from the park. It's nothing serious, but thought you should know.

Depending on the wind... the reservoir could be tough too. Yesterday was VERY windy with the wind coming over the water along the Shand Dam... there were small swells in the water and it looked cold. DEFINITELY bring a wetsuit.

Other then that... the park entrance was being swept of gravel and everything else looks awesome for Sunday.

See you on the roads/trails.

I was REALLY disappointed to hear about the change to the bike course.   Definitely still flat and fast enough, but the really FUN sections on #4, 5, and 22 are gone.   Cry    Now it's more like the run course - B O R I N G.....    I would take the slower speeds of a challenging, hilly course that required some technical skills any day over this route.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Sunday!    Cool

I have to confess I'm freaked by the bike portion since my accident.  I've only been out on a real bike twice since but there was no traffic there.  I just don't feel fully comfy handling it.  Now I'm going to be surrounded by other cyclists going really fast - and now hills!  I am *praying* I don't have another spill!!  That's my biggest fear - the stuff of my dreams.  I'll fall and take out the whole bloody wave!  So when you say "hill" - would it be comparable to say Keele Road north of King?  Bayview extension?  Mount Pleasant or Avenue Road?

Sorry to hear you had an accident.   I would be really freaked out too!    However, I think you are worrying WAY too much.   The roads are wide enough for people to easily pass and there really isn't any tough riding - unless of course we end up having 25km+ winds, which isn't in the forecast.

Also take into account when you come out of the water - I am a slow swimmer, so fortunately there isn't a ton of cycling acitivity around me when I start.    Always look on the bright side.   Wink

Just focus on relaxing and you will be fine.

I am not too familiar with these roads... I was downtown yesterday and did run on Mount Pleasant, but didn't see any big hill.

The hill I'm talking about is where the road drops down the hillside to a river. The road is wide and there is plenty of room for traffic and cyclists. You have to remember too, this is back country roads... there isn't much in the way of traffic... and with it being a loop, you don't have cycling traffic going in both directions, which gives even MORE room for vehicles to pass. Some of the roads we will be on also have wide paved shoulders, so you shouldn't worry.

kimmax... don't worry, you'll have fun on the bike. It's a lovely ride to get back "on the horse" as it were. If you don't want to go fast, the scenery is really quite lovely. Be steady, relax and enjoy!!!!

Thanks for the update on the construction.  Looking at the map, it appears that we do sideroads 4 and 5 first (that's what we did in practice) - so I think that makes it an early downhill (I don't really remember any hills sticking out).

Kimmax - I'll be hanging out at the back of the bikers with you.  I'll be the one being passed by everyone (my swim is much stronger than my bike - not that anything is actually "strong").

ETA - sorry, I'm an idiot.  I thought people were referring to the change from last year (when it was 33km) to this year.  I didn't realise that a change in the bike route had been posted on 13-July.  I guess the construction on Fourth/Fifth line is moot anyway.

I didn't know about this change either when I drove part of the route on Monday. I'm not sure why they changed the bike, the new road is done and is pristine condition. It would be perfect for riding on... I guess they had to make a decision, since the gravel shoulders could still be soft which would be a little dangerous if you HAD to go off the pavement.

The new route will be relatively flat, but boring... and I personally don't like out and back courses... but what can you do... we race what they give us.

Weather is looking better (no rain), but the wind will be an issue... 20km/h W-NW winds, will affect the bike... hopefully it will be calm for the swim, otherwise could be tough going out.

Good luck everyone... and have fun!!!!!
