I get pretty motivated by training with people better than me.

Usually!

I have a crazy friend of mine that I do most of my long rides with. He starts doing these bra’ves (sp). So, he does rides of 200km, 400km, 600km and he’ll be doing a 1200km soon. The 600k was close to a 24 hour event!

I can now only ride with him on his off weeks when he goes for short rides (80 miles)

I’m not sure if this is so motivating any longer...  Crazy people!

It's absolutely all relative.

The person hitting 7:00 min miles on a run is comparing themselves to someone that can hit 6:00.  It's OK for 7:00 min miler to consider themselves "not that fast."  They're not, compared to the 6:00 minute miler.  But, somehow, it's more accepted for someone who averages a 10:00 pace to say they're not that fast.  To the person that's struggling to hit 12:00, you're fast compared to them!

I've never understood posts like..."Psshh, you think an 8:00 minute mile is slow??  Try a 9:00 minute mile."   It's all relative.  I get out, do my thing, and know that people are going to be faster, and slower, than I am.

This mentality is going to be an adjustment for me!  I am new to the game and come from a team sport background.  Most of the time there is 1 winner and 1 loser.  It is hard for me to come to terms with not having a realistic chance of winning!  I think I'll get over it and love the challenge and personal satisfaction that comes with attaining training and race goals.

Hear hear!

I was browsing BT last night and came across a thread in which the OP was frustrated for how "slow" a runner he was...and then went on to say his race pace is 7:00/mi. and he sprints at 6:00/mi. And I was thinking I will never ever in my lifetime come close to that. I need to remember that I'm faster than I was last season, and that's what counts.

What is that?

Qualifiers for Paris-Brest-Paris according to hubby.  LOOOOOONNNG rides.  Shortest I've seen posted by a local cycling group was still over 100 miles.
