Overall Rank = 925/3148
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 131/284
Pre-race routine:

Sat night, in bed @ 9:30, slept to 4am. Bagel & OJ when I woke up, a cliff bar just before the walk from transition to the start area. Got to the race site around 5:40 to set up transition.
Event warmup:

Did about a half mile run to warm up, walked over to the start & put on the wetsuit & swam about 100 yds to get used the water.
Swim
  • 27m 46s
  • 1650 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Standing in the start "chute," I felt a small sense of panic for a second thinking about the dash to the water & hoping I don't get clobbered. Once the gun goes off things are fine, I got into the into the water, couple of dolphins & into the freestyle. I got sandwiched a couple of times but nothing I hadn't previously experienced in ohte tris. I arrived at the steps & it looked like I wouldn't be able to get a spot to go up with other swimmers fininshing but found an opening & got onto transition.
What would you do differently?:

Tried to draft as much as possible & would do that more from the beginning.
Transition 1
  • 02m 33s
Comments:

The wetsuit came off surprisingly well, I had sprayed with PAM so I guess it works. Got on the bike & into the pedals with no issues.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 3s
  • 25 miles
  • 21.41 mile/hr
Comments:

I borrowed some aero bars that I practiced with last week, they obviously helped riding into the wind. Real pleased with my bike leg...
What would you do differently?:

Still want to get faster & just have to do the training...
Transition 2
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

Good, not great transition..no problems with the gear
Run
  • 57m 37s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I have a mental block with my running...other than some stiffness & the legs I was fine. Just can't mentally turn it up a notch on the run. Plan to work on this during the summer, have to get better on the runs...
What would you do differently?:

Work harder on running & quit thinking about the mile markers & how far from the finish & just run...
Post race
Warm down:

Met my wife & son, my son came over with me at 5:30 & stayed through the entire event, on the otherand, my 13 yr old daughter stayed in bed at teh hotel until we got back...she says she'll come watch when they start the races later in the day!
Grabbed some food in the post-race tent, got a massage & just took it easy waiting on transition to re-open.
Sunday night we drove to Sarasota to see my mother & eat dinner with my sister's family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My run
My run
My run
I had hoped for a time around 2:50 being my first olympic distance so to get below 2:40 was nice...

Event comments:

My first Oly & St Anthony's does a great job with a beautiful venue for a race. I had hoped to meet other BTR's Friday evening but ran into traffic jam & got in much later than expected, hopefully at another race or next year @ St Anthony's we'll meet.
Hope to do this race again next year as long as I can get registered...this race is so popular that registration fills in 24 hrs!

You did a great job.  Nice average on the bike.  Gotta  do some interval training with the running to get the legs to learn how to turn over faster.  You did a creditable time for any oly distance, but this being your first it's a great start!  Sorry we missed you at the pasta dinner Saturday night...it was a great time.  I missed the Friday nite meet too.

Another person with a sub 3 hour race....I am jealous (sniffle, sniffle). Really, though- what an amazing accomplishment...I still have my "post-race" glow. Looking forward to meeting you next year. I think we can all agree this was one of the BEST organized events around. Take care!

Great job, Peter! Sounds like you had a good race, and a lot less drama than some of the other race reports..no missing equipment, puking, or falling down! :p

Sorry this TNTer didn't hook up with your keg.  I spent a lot of time hanging at the TNT tent, and the main food tent.
