If you train for both multisport and triathlons, can the kiyaking and swimming compliment each other? i.e. instead of doing 4 swims for triathlon, can you do 2x swims and 2x kiyaks per week and they will kind of work out the same muscles and therefore transfer fitness across?

Like all I'm wanting to know is if the average age grouper can train for both at the same time.

Also if swimming will make you better at kiyaking and vice versa.

I took my kayak out for the first time this year as kind of a fun break from swim, bike, run and enjoyed it greatly. I think that it certainly is a good compliment to swimming. I had been considering some strength training but may just do a few hours a week of hard kayaking.

Sure, you can train both at the same time.  Will one help the other?  Not much.

You need to come up here and do the Ottawa Riverkeeper Tri next June.  There is a paddle/bike/run event that has been going on for a few years now.

The only way one will be effective cross training for the other is if you're either swimming or kayaking very very badly.
Kayaking comes down to core strength, quads, hip flexors, everything between your knees and the bottom of your rib cage basically, when you're doing it right. If you're using your arms and your lats, all kayaking is going to do is give you an overuse injury.
I suppose it could help with body positioning in the water by strengthening your core.
I'm not saying you shouldn't go kayaking, I love kayaking, I even occasionally get paid to go kayaking, but its not going to make you any better at swimming.

I swear I wish this was in the USA
I live in Va and we do have a couple of similar things, but nothing serious.
