For those of you in well, the state of Texas, are you outside training in this heat?  I've not gotten myself around to getting up and running early in the morning before work, but when I get out of work around 5:30 or 6, its 100 degrees outside!

I've planned my long run (hour, hour 15 maybe) for today, but its scorching hot outside.  Is it a bad idea to get out there?  Should I move it to a treadmill, despite my absolute hatred for those machines?

DO IT (if you're prepared)! I try to get out in the morning (like 0445!!) but not always possible. Yeah, it's hot--so you have to do three things:
1.) Hydrate well all day long before going out on your run
2.) Hydrate during your run, more so than normal cause you're losing more
3.) Wear appropriate sun protection: clothing, hat, sunscreen, etc.

Also, be prepared for your times to be slower, and that's okay...your normal effort will most likely not result in your normal pace simply cause it's hot, but it's the effort/intensity/consistency that will help with improvement.  I abhor treadmills...and the heat is one of the motivators for me to get my butt out of bed right now.  Though, I have a run scheduled this next week specifically for the PM, and it's gonna suck, so I'm going to prepare ahead of time.

you bet... go for it.  I am out in it almost daily.  However, it is true that your times will be slower so don't put too much pressure on yourself.  Try to stay in your zones even if it means a dramatic speed decrease.

I hear ya... I ran at 10:30 am today and it was already blistering hot! Another option is to run in the evening about 1 1/2 hours before sunset. Temps still are high, but air seems cooler and there's more shade; and as you run the temp actually lowers : )

Eh, you won't die. Well, you could die if you get heat stroke. So, take some water.

I also find that carrying a small wash rag to wipe my face down makes for a more enjoyable experience. When I have sweat burning my eyes, it's not fun.

Otherwise, you just gotta suck it up buttercup.

You have to plan your workouts more carefully...for instance, you shouldn't be planning your long run in 100 degree weather.

I hear yeah. Because of my schedule I generally do my runs at 11am, OUCH! But I am getting through them. H ave wondered about doing my interval training during the daylight hours.I just doing see any other time to do them. Last night went check the temps at 9PM and it still was 95+. Even this morning as I went to work at 5:15am it was in the 80s.

I just try and make myself believe that if I can get decent at running at noon, then when my race happens I should FLY.

My schedule (well my DH's schedule actually) only allows for me to run in the evenings, so it's either in the heat or on the treadmill.  I've been trying to run outdoors 1-2x per week just to get acclimated.  Last week, I ran at 8:30 pm and it was still 90-something degrees...but any later and it would be too dark by the end of my run.  I may be a wuss, but I don't like to run alone after nightfall even in my neighborhood...too many crazies out there!  I could also run at 4 am, but same problem - too dark.

When I ran this morning at 10 it was 95 degrees with heat index of 1000 and rising quickly. Our usual gulf coast breeze wasnt around, we had some heater from mother nature blowing from the west

I will be outside everyday, especially for a run, barring hail, and tornadoes of course. I loath working out indoors. Like so many others have said, water, water, water, and if you are a heavy sweater like me electrolytes!

I remember hearing a month ago that this summer was supposed to be cooler than last summer.

Still waiting for that cooler weather...

Do it for about 2 weeks and your body will acclimate to the heat. Not such bad thing if your doing1/2 or IM's.

Also wear the correct clothing. I posted " tips for running in the heat", the other day. Can't remember if it was on the Texas page or just the Tri. Any way, a new type of shirt i was wearing really helps. Did an 8 miler in 97 deg. heat full sun.

Ran tonight after my ride... started at 8:25 PM... it wasn't bad at all. I was surprised. I didn't even carry water. Just ran for 30 minutes/3 miles.

I'll be out there tonight with gatorade in hand.  At least the humidity has been lower than normal, that helps just a little.

I had a long run this morning @ 6:15am.  1:10 over 8.5 miles and I was dripping wet when I got home!  Glad I carried a bike water bottle with me!!

OP: Plan your workouts around the heat/weather.  I try to do most, if not all, of my training outside so race day elements like heat don't throw me off too badly and I will know how my body normally reacts.  Most importantly, HYDRATE! (and HTFU)

The previous summers weren't that bad.

Come on Texans, we're supposed to be tough, stop complaining.

I tell you, I'd love to be able to run in the morning.  But my days start at 3:45 am already.  I normally get home about 6 or 6:30 pm and still have to either run, swim, or ride.  I am doing to Austin Tri sept.7th, and its my first so I am really trying to train hard.  I found a little secret that helps me recover from the heat though.  I eat 1 to 2 Electrolite ice pops after a workout and cool down.  I have not crammed up yet!

HTFU guys haha I did a bike ride Thursday at 5pm when even the breeze was hot. Only difference was I'm drinking about twice the amount of water that I usually do out on my rides.

+1 on trying to get runs in before sunset when it's shadier, much easier to deal with the temps then.

Biking in the heat is much easier than running in the heat for me.  I think I am so slow on the run that I don't generate any breeze to cool myself down...  I will stick to running in the mornings before 8 or 9 am.

I ran 2 miles at 8:30 AM... and then another 2 at 11:00 AM. BOTH were very miserable in their own special way.

Although at 11:00 AM produced rivers of sweat running down my body. It was all I could do to keep running. I said out loud, "SUCK IT UP!" and made myself keep running.

All in all... miserable.

I didn't mean to come off like such a wuss!  I still do my runs despite the heat.  I wish I could plan it all out a little better, but life is sort of getting in the way.

I carry a Polar bottle with me, which is definitely a life saver.  I think an hour in the sun without any water might actually kill me.

The great news is that it looks like we might top out at a cool 98 degrees this week.  Sweet! Cool
