Savor the moment of completing that workout, then get some chocolate milk, some water, and depending on how sore I feel do an icebath, then shower, get on some comfy clothes, complain off and on, then relax, and look for sympathy.

bryancd - 2009-07-03 2:25 PM Chocolate Milk....Good grief. Spend another 1 min and make a recovery drink with: Skim Milk 1 Banana Some blueberries or strawberries 1 scoop Protein Powder Some ice Put in a blender and mix it up. More natural sugars and carbs, anti-oxidents, all the stuff a recovering triathlete needs. Chocolate Milk is just an excuse for a treat when there are better options. Just think about it for second and you will see. And don't start posting links to Triathlete Magazine or studies showing chocolate milk as this great recovery option. It's fine, but you can do better.

What are your thoughts on all the research that suggests chocolate milk is one of the best post exercise recovery drinks?
That in the absence of no recovery drink or a store bought one, it offers benefit. When compared to a more natural, whole foods combination like I suggest, it's a poor substitute. Seriously, compare sugar flavored with coco and milk vs. what I describe. Which is better for you?

Never had much luck debating someone with a sample size of one, so you can have your smoothies and I'll have my creamy, rich, delicious chocolate milk.

i am not the only one!!!!

on the recovery drink. as others have said, its not that choc milk is a bad one, but all of the studies are comparing it to other recovery drinks (which again are simply comparing themselves to each other).

it is better than nothing. but there are better things you can do, like get in a real meal, or as bryan said, a smoothie that is basically most of a meal.

frankly i think people heard that choc milk was good for recovery, and now they drink it after every single workout, where that is not really needed if you are eating right at the levels most people train.

I usually eat something with protein (nuts/milk/yogurt/eggs...), and the STRETCH!!!

I did my second brick ever today (real newbie!) and I stretched for an hour afterwards!

Potentially stupid questions:  Why chocolate milk?  Everyone seems to say chocolate milk....can't I just drink my normal skim milk?  Is there any difference?

If it's a key workout, I'll drink a huge cholocate milk glass, eat a banana and than make a cofee to get with me in the ice bath.

For easy to moderate workout, I'll hydrate and eat.

After I catch my breath i have a choco milk/protein smoothie and log the workout while I cool off.  When I stop sweating I'll wake up the family, make the kids breakfast, then it's a shower & get ready for work.

rbtrumpet...the only reason i have seen for the chocolate over regular milk is for the additional sugar/carbs.  that said, after a hard run/ride the first thing i do is stretch (5-10min) and drink some water.  i will then drink some regular 2% milk (i unfortunately eat enough sugar/carbs throughout the day i don't need to add more by adding the chocolate and sugar).  then i spend time logging my stuff and cooling off.  then shower.  then dinner.

and the reason i don't add banana and all that other stuff is b/c i already do a shake like that every day for breakfast, so i don't want to do it again.

Then I take a hot bath soak, then try to eat something healthy with whole crabs.

Okay, I gotta laugh.....is that a New England thing?  Cool

Yah my spell check missed that since that is a real word.....whole grain or natural carbs. I had a pretty crappy day today...6 hours in ER but luckily I'm fine.

Too funny.... I guess clam chowder would be a good recovery food protein (clams and milk), carbs (flour), bunch of veggies and lots of butter (not really that good)

I go with chocolate milk, shower, big stack of pancakes/french toast/waffles
