Subject: Speedplay Pedal Question

I have a question for those who use Speedplay pedals.  How often do you grease the bearings?  Also, one of the screws for the grease ports has been stripped, is there any way to fix it?

Yes, you should be.  There is a port on the outer part of the pedal under the little grommet thing.  Speedplay makes a specific grease gun that works with it.  You should be doing it every year or so.

I'd suggest greasing them annually.

I was on a charity ride a couple weeks ago, and a friend of mine had his speed play just fall apart while riding. The spindle separated from the bearing race and the 'lollipop' just stuck on his cleat. This WAS after 5 years of riding on them with no maintenance.

FWIW...

At least once a year. Every six months if you do a lot of volume.

The stripped grease port can probably be retapped. Speedplay's can be completely rebuilt if necessary.

I am going to assume you are talking about Speedplay Zero's?  I have a pair of Frogs that I rode on my Mt bike for at least 10 years without greasing (they were TI shafts) and I took them apart and greased them recently (they looked fine, but my MT bike doesn't get lots of miles).

I know alot of people who ride with zero's and very few of them even know that they should be greased once in a while.

A simple test I use is to spin the pedal. If the pedal spins to easily, it's time to put some grease in.

They recommend lubing the spring and cleat every couple rides so you can get in and out of the pedals easily.  Greasing is only recommended every 2,000 miles or 3 months.
