Can someone please explaing how the Tour de France works?  For example, how does the teaming work?  Are team members in competition with each others w/i the team?  How can someone be 'only seconds behind' over the hundred of miles.  How do they start each moring?  That is, is their starting postion determined by the previous day's finish?  Does the whole team get to start with the best finisher on the team?  How many members are there on each team?  What if one team member drops out?  Can they be replaced?  What is the idea behind a team of bikers?  Is that just for drafting sake?

Lot of questions there.  You might want to start someplace like this.

Check back with more questions.

Hey Mike, that was partly tounge-in-cheek.  Although that's as good a place as any to get started on some of the basics.

Most of your questions are the team dynamics.  The first thing to realize as that when the Tour begins there are only a few teams that even expect to have a contender for the overall win (GC).  Others are there to try for some stage wins or go after a jersey (King of the Mountains, Sprinter, etc.).  Teams are generally set up to support the main goal of the team.  For example, if they are looking to have a sprinter grab some stage wins, then they will look to have set-up or "lead out" guys who can take massive pulls before the sprinter unleashes over the final meters of the race.  For a team with GC contenders, they'll want generally solid riders who can work when needed on flat stages plus some good climbers to help in the mountains.  Their job will be to help cover breaks, set tempo, allow their leader to draft and conserve energy, etc.

There's a fair amount of tactics and stratgey involved.  And sometimes there are "overlapping" duties and competition within the team (e.g., see Astana this year). When you start to understand some of those things, it makes watching the Tour more interesting.

That really barely scratches the surface, but might give you an idea of what to dig into more.

GC?

I heard on the new tonight that Lance might "get some competition from one of his own team members" and suprised me.  So how does the team decide who is cock of the walk?  Is it based on individuals TTs?

General Classification.   I.e., for the overall lead.

Astana is really an odd duck this year.  Most teams have a  pretty clear leader that the rest will work for.  Had Lance not come back that would have been Contador.  Now, it's unclear, although the director of Astana has said he'll let the road decide.   On Monday Lance took advantage of an opportunity that was seen by some as a slap at Contador.  Today Contador returned the favor.

Before the tour each Lance and Contador were fighting for their lieutenants, Contador won out and theoretically has more people on his side and loyal to him.  It's really more of a soap opera.
